Bias in the Criticisms Section

The crticism section is very biased in favor of the show. The few criticisms, which are vaguely and briefly mentioned, are quickly rebuted and disregarded. Also, many valid criticisms such as the shows puported encouragement of conformity, lack of individuality of the characters, one sided messages, etc. are not mentioned. Positive aspects of the show should be discussed separatley from the criticisms. Retep412

Then find some sourced criticism. There's a lot of complaints about the show so it shouldn't be hard to find some real information from a reputable source. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 22:38, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
Right. Everytime someone has added critcism it has been unsourced. Everytime they were prompted to source it, they did not and it was removed per WP:V. I imagine it wouldn't be hard to find sourced criticism from a WP:RS if someone would take the time to do it.--Isotope23 01:45, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
A quick search on-line turned up a report by the Indiana Department of Education that discusses the negative aspects of the show. For example, "The court also noted legitimate criticism of Barney–“that his shows do not assist children in learning to deal with negative feelings and emotions.” According to one critic, 'Barney offers our children a one-dimensional world where everyone must be happy and everything must be resolved right away."
www.doe.state.in.us/legal/pdf/quarterly_reports/2005_aprjune.pdf Retep412
Almost but not quite. They are reporting on a court case, "Lyons Partnership v. Ted Giannoulas", which does not state who the critic was nor if the quotes were taken out of context. It would be good to see where the court got it's criticism from. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 17:25, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

A little searching produced the actual court document 179 F.3d 384: "Perhaps the most insightful criticism regarding Barney is that his shows do not assist children in learning to deal with negative feelings and emotions. As one commentator puts it, the real danger from Barney is "denial: the refusal to recognize the existence of unpleasant realities. For along with his steady diet of giggles and unconditional love, Barney offers our children a one-dimensional world where everyone must be happy and everything must be resolved right away." Chala Willig Levy, The Bad News About Barney, Parents, Feb. 1994, at 191-92 (136-39)." THere you have it with ALL the need information.--BruceGrubb (talk) 08:42, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Seen that before and in my comment above yours have already responded to it. Who is it the court is quoting? CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 23:37, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
Irrelevant as I quoted the WHOLE thing. It is part of a court document and is part of the public record. It clearly is quoting an article called "The Bad News About Barney" written by Chala Willig Levy which is found on pg 191-92 and published in Parents, Feb. 1994. THis can be confirmed by doing a google search for said article.--BruceGrubb (talk) 01:45, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
Actually it is NOT surprising that negative citations do not exist. Its called libel backed with a strong PC punch. The general negative public opinion is a non-specific anonymous survey result. So this maybe an example of why crowd can boo a celebrity but any individual who goes on record can be forced to withdraw comments via a lawsuit. And I bet Barney Inc has lots of lawyers protecting this cash cow plus volunteer force from parents happy with the babysitting power of Barney.
And I am not too impressed with a few universities studies backing Barney. There are way too many pure academic (vs practical) educators who rate methods first by mechanical ability to hold attention. I note that the cited source dwells mostly on presentation of simple content and doesn't address the shows ability to help pre-school think and doesn't dwell too much on meaningful and appropriate recall. That is most citations are needed to show Barney is a full and educational profitable package for pre-school. You do find that range of studies for say Sesame Street.69.23.124.142 (talk) 14:26, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

OK,like, why is it that Barney has been criticized for its lack of educational value when:(a) they do teach stuff,i.e.numbers,manners,shapes,abc's,etc. and (b) teletubbies is what's really un-educational(I mean,COME ON!IT'S RETARDED AND POINTLESS!They caan't even pronounce a simple word!)in my opinion Barney is billons of times more educational then the piece of *beeeeeeeeeeeep* that is the Teletubbies.P.S.To anyone out there:give me one good thing that Teletubbies teaches...74.249.96.11 (talk) 01:03, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

This article needs a ton of work

  • There should be a list of video releases (most of which are well-produced 50 minute shows that are not shown on TV)
  • the main picture needs to be a screenshot of the television show, not the video game.
  • Maybe a mention of Barney merchandise, and the video game screenshot can be used there?

Merge

I agree with the merge proposal. The show is called Barney & Friends, it would make sense to merge the articles about the friends. Anthopos 21:38, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

I proposed a merge on the Barney discussion page, because that page is nearly identical in content to this one and even the vandalism is frequently duplicated between the two entries. I just have no idea how to formally propose or begin the procedure for getting a merge of the two articles. 24.218.222.86 15:51, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Interogation

this sounds questionable, can someone provide a news-link for this claim:

"After the Iraq war of 2003, American interrogators reportedly used Barney's theme song, "I Love You," to break the resistance of high-ranking Iraqi captives, playing the tune over and over to disorient and demoralize the prisoners."

i read the link article, and it says that "i love you" was used to train american operatives not to torure iraqis...

quote from article:

"Trust me, it works," a US "operative" told Newsweek magazine.

"In training, they forced me to listen to the Barney I Love You song for 45 minutes. I never want to go through that again."

the article talks about use of Heavy Metal, not Barney to break will of the prisoners.

I heard that...

The person who plays as barney got shot and they only show reruns. Is this true?

Not likely, since the article has multiple characters listed as that evil beast. They'd replace it as likely as anything else.

I heard that the actor died in the suit filming the movie..

Semi-protect?

This article has been vandalised continuously for more than a month. The edits here mainly consists of blanking (which is vandalism) or reverting vandalism. This is one of the most vandalised pages on Wikipedia. Should we semi-protect this page, as the users who vandalise this page are anons. --Terence Ong (恭喜发财) 09:53, 28 January 2006 (UTC)

  • Agreed. I can see how no decent contributions can be made while everyone's busy undoing vandalism. -- Ch'marr 19:00, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
I disagree. The vandalism is so slow that it's not really a problem. The main vandalism comes from one or two users and I already blocked one for a week. I won't semi-protect but if someone else does I won't revert the protection either. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 19:14, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
We need it now more than ever. Since I reverted the funding vandalism, there were 19 edits, most of them were vandalism attempts by anonymous users. I'm not a big Barney fan, but I just want to make sure that "vandal anons" don't stand in our way. -- M (speak/spoken) 19:40, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
This time I agree. I think that it's not just this but also List of Barney & Friends episodes and videos and List of Barney & Friends stage shows. I also think that one of the anons is making what they think are good faith edits but in the long run are just vandalistic. The come in from mor than one IP and dump in a copy and past from their own computer which by now includes the "gay sex orgy" caption in the picture. Unfortunally I don't think it would be right for me to do the protection. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 21:18, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
Why not, may I ask? -- M (speak/spoken) 23:40, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Yes its funny, but there really are people who think Barney is literally evil (Rev. Falwell or one of those guys was one famous defamer at one point along with the teletubbies). Who's Riff?

This question is for 70.19.242.190:

Barney was created in 1987 by Sheryl Leach of Dallas, Texas. She came

up with the idea for the program while considering TV shows that she felt would be educational and appeal to her son. Leach then brought together a team who created a series of home videos, Barney and the Backyard Gang, which also starred actress Sandy Duncan in the first 3 videos. Later, Barney was joined by Baby Bop and B.J. and Riff in 2006

Think of it this way. Barney teaches us to love and trust everyone. Someday a person may say "Want to go in my car for a ride and go to Chuckie Chesses" they could kidnapp them and murder them. They could also say "Want to have sex with me" since the child may not know what sex is they may not know it's bad the kid would get raped. That's why some pepole don't like barney for a real reason.Eddy643 13:31, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Original Research

The following was original research so I removed it.

"one particular episode made use of the phrase, "A stranger is a friend you have not met yet", which some parents may view as sending a dangerous message to their children."

"[peer pressure] encourages children to suppress outward signs of unhappiness rather than deal openly with their feelings, which has been shown to have dangerous effects on their development.'

Original Research part 2

I just removed everything uncited with a fact tag as well as one section that had a cite, but the cite had nothing to do with the statement it was supposed to be sourcing. Please find sources before adding those sections back. Right now they constitute original research without any supporting citations.--Isotope23 18:16, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

  • Also, "Because of this, the show is banned from places like Japan and the Philippines" is sourced to the IMDB trivia section for the show. Anyone care to provide an actual reliable source?--Isotope23 18:19, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

I don't think it's banned in the Philippines unless it's been banned within the last 2 years I wasn't there. As far as I know, they show Barney a lot in RPN Channel 9 (much to my dismay, seeing that I prefer Sesame Street). Sukotsuto 10:55, 09 January 2007 (PST)

That section is from IMDB, which is pretty unreliable as a source. I wouldn't object to removing it unless there is a real source for this.--Isotope23 19:00, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

I've removed the text:
"Nemerous individuals have criticized the show, saying that everybody acts alike, and never express any unique traits [1]."
For starters this is weasel wording. The other problem is that it is sourced to the IMDB "User Comments" section which does not meet any definition of a reliable source. There needs to be better sourcing for such a statement.--Isotope23 19:16, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

I recently heard of an incident that supposedly resulted in legal action against the show involving a television with an image appearing to be a demon. Episode notability

Many or all of the existing individual episode pages for this series appear to fail the notability guidelines for television episodes, and have been tagged accordingly. These articles can be improved through the inclusion of real-world information from reliable sources to assert notability. Overly long plot summaries should be edited, to a maximum length of approximately ten words per minute of screen time. Trivia should be integrated into the body of the article, or removed if it is not directly relevant. Quotes and images should only be used as part of a critical analysis of the episode. You might also consider merging any notable information onto the show's "List of episodes" or season pages. Otherwise, when these pages come up for review in fourteen days, they may be redirected or merged. If you want any help or further information, then come to Wikipedia:WikiProject Television/Episode coverage. Thanks. TTN 16:02, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

There is no reason to believe he is a t-rex

The show never says Barney is a t-rex, and he could be a number of other carnivorous dinosaurs including the allosaurus. We have no reason to believe he's one more than the other. I'm editing that just to say "dinosaur". -User:CreamOfTheCrop —The preceding signed but undated comment was added at 13:00, August 24, 2007 (UTC).

Actually back in 1992, as I remember, they say he's a T-rex once. Kagome 85Kagome_85 —The preceding signed but undated comment was added at 11:54, August 25, 2007 (UTC).

Oh. Sorry 'bout that! Thanks.

Unless someone can provide a source, it is original research to add that to the article.--Isotope23 talk 13:36, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Not a big deal, he looks like a T-Rex, just need a source for the article.--Isotope23 talk 14:07, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Maybe if someone has old Barney and Friends episodes they can look and see if they find where they say that. I don't have any old episodes, but someone else on here might. 142.163.22.178Kagome_85

I've seen interviews and bios of Barney, which clearly state he's a t-rex. SonicHOG 22:29, 19 September 2007 (UTC)

Possible copyright violation

Hi,

many phrases are too much similar to [2] and [3]. It seems a copyright violation. Someone more practical of english Wikipedia could check? Thanks --Sbisolo 22:28, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

If it's anyone violating copyright, it's those sites. They're cheaply made and thieved information from the page. SonicHOG 22:32, 19 September 2007 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by CambridgeBayWeather (talkcontribs)

I'd wager both of those sites decided to use the GFDL wikipedia article as a basis without attribution. It wouldn't be the first time I've seen this happen (I once read a newspaper article that was nearly verbatim what I'd written in a Wikipedia article... and I didn't write that newspaper article). The second site is dated Sep 1, 2006. Looking at the wikipedia article, the similar text apparently predates that site (see diff).--Isotope23 talk 12:49, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Commentary in the starting paragraph

Can someone please remove the commentary in the opening paragraph? The sentence "Barney & Friends is a super gay childrens television show..." is a violation of Wikipedia rules as it is commentary and very POV. This needs to be removed immedeatly and I reccommend locking the article from editing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.128.162.124 (talk) 21:22, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

It has been removed. Josborne2382 21:27, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
But I don't like Barney! >:( [User: Nate Speed]
Next time you see something like that you can remove it yourself. :) You are allowed to. --DearPrudence 06:44, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Rickey Carter "Derek" comitted suicide?

I read somewhere that he comitted suicide. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alex B. Goode (talkcontribs) 22:35, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Where did you read this? According to the IMDB he is still alive.

Some episodes banned from American TV?

I heard there were some episodes where Barney said words like "cock" on television and encouraged children to say them on camera. Are these episodes banned from TV? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.171.37.115 (talk) 21:51, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Some, yes. Other, maybe not. Angie Y. (talk) 21:38, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Incident

Didn't the original Barney get fired for swearing after one of the children dropped a radio on his foot?--72.208.190.234 (talk) 20:11, 23 July 2008 (UTC)--72.208.190.234 (talk) 20:11, 23 July 2008 (UTC)--72.208.190.234 (talk) 20:11, 23 July 2008 (UTC)--72.208.190.234 (talk) 20:11, 23 July 2008 (UTC)--72.208.190.234 (talk) 20:11, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Several actors who have played Barney have gotten fired for various reasons and yes, he yelled "Motherfucker!" after a child dropped the radio on him. Lol, this episode is banned. Another actor was fired in a similar incedent when he fell down a flight of stairs in front of the whole crew and swore.

Barney Bunch

Should Barney being part of the Barney Bunch YouTube meme (along with Drew Pickles and Ronald McDonald) be mentioned in this article or the Barney Humor page, or both. I am new, so I don't understand how wikis work very well, so I need help editing. --Bb22493 (talk) 20:46, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
