banner[edit]

It would be useful to know why the English word "banner" is used as the translation for this term. What does it have to do with a flag? --Jfruh (talk) 00:48, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The point surely is lack of consistency: elsewhere in China Wikipedia uses PINYIN. Whereas for Inner Mongolia there is an absurd approach of translating literally so we have banner and league etc...which. Do we translate the various Novistad in Easter Eurrope as Newtown? NO! I am trying to travel in Inner Mongolia ....which in iteslf should be Nei Mongol.....as we don't translate Hebei Province as North River nor Shanxi Province as West Mountain. I am trying to travel in Nei Mongol and it's proving a disater using this info: I show maps to locals and naturally they shrug their shoulders and names like Banner and League but they'd understand it in Pinyin (with an unavoidable side issue that they often use the Mongul name variations....but that's a traveler's problem and delight!) IMO the whole of the Nei Mongol entries need a complete revisit by someone with linguisitic and regional appreciation of the issues.
