Isn't this the national animal of Costa Rica? -- Cato Neimoidia 00:19, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Names[edit]

I added a citation needed tag on the translation of the tapir's name as "jungle horse". In investigating for personal curiousity the question of why tapirs were not domesticated, I discovered that there have been some attempts by members of LDS churches to interpret tapirs as being the "horses" referred to in the Book of Mormon; this makes the exact translation important, lest it seem that wikipedia is given creedence to a religious theory in its own voice. It also seems likely that the locals, upon learning of horses in the 15th or 16th centuries, would have adapted the word for tapir to horses, rather than the other way around. A citation could clear this up quite quickly. siafu (talk) 17:36, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The highland Maya of Guatemala used their word for "deer" for horses; I'm not sure about the lowland Maya, who would have been far more likely to have contact with tapirs. Simon Burchell (talk) 22:18, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Lack of protection[edit]

Do Colombia, Nicaragua, and and Honduras offer any legal protection, because it doesn't say if they do. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.248.186.107 (talk) 00:25, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
