I can't believe that 30% of the population of Kino have anything to do with ironwood carving --- not now nor in the past. Where would such a percentage have come from?

=[edit]

Hi Steve,

Here is the source for those figures:

Bracamonte, A. & R. Perez. 1999. Pesca Ribereña y Actores Socialies: Los casos de Bahía Kino y de Punta Chueca en el Municipio de Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. Programa Golfo de California. Documento para discussion interna. Presentado a Conservación Internacional A. C. Mexico.

I believe this refers to the adult population. So that means about 3 out of 10 adult Kinenos are involved in making and selling wood carvings. That doesn't seem too far off based on my informal walking census of businesses in 2006. But I am eager to see someone undertake another study since Bracamonte's work is now dated.

Well, then, somebody did write that. (One would have to see how they did their research.) But I have been in and out of Kino Bay for years, and living here for the for a couple of months intenstively, and there is *so* much else that is going on economically, I really see the carving industry as way down in importance. I see some for sale in front of one restaurant, but there is just too much else going one --- the crab canning factory (which I haven't located), the stores, the restaurants, the many beer expendios, the hotels, the house construction, etc., that carving seems insignificant.

Can anyone locate the following to add:

-A map of Sonora that shows the location of Bahia de Kino

-a useful map of the community

map is inaccurate[edit]

The map shown is of Tiburon Island, not of Kino Bay. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.170.128.200 (talk) 19:37, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
