The 5th century "secure dating" for the earliest occurrence of Aqaba ware is ot as secure as some might believe. Key source: R. Tomber, Amphorae from the Red Sea and their contribution to the interpretation of late Roman trade beyond the empire, in: Eiring, J. and J. Lund (eds.), Transport amphorae and trade in the eastern Mediterranean. Acts of the International Colloquium at the Danish Institute in Athens, September 26–29, 2002 (Århus: University Press) 393–402, esp. 401. The dating is dabatable.
