NATO Ranks[edit]

The rank pictures are not shown in the NATO rank format as shown for the British Army and United States Army because Australia is not a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Although Australia follows many of its conventions, it is not a member.

But do Australians really use US rank/pay codes? It could make sense from an international pov to specify NATO codes if Aus has no official system in place. 202.89.155.188 08:24, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Field Marshal[edit]

"Unlike the British Army, no rank of Field Marshal exists within the Australian Army". Since Prince Philip is still alive and holds the rank, how can this be true? -- Necrothesp 03:59, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I thought field marshal was only used during wartime? (JROBBO 23:14, 30 March 2006 (UTC))[reply]
In which country? In Britain it only became a wartime only rank in the 1990s, and it can still be granted to members of the Royal Family and (exceptionally) to other senior officers in peacetime. Existing FMs can continue to hold the rank, naturally. Only three Australian Field Marshals have ever been created, none of them in wartime, Prince Philip being the most recent. -- Necrothesp 23:26, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

History of the symbols[edit]

Perhaps, this article should include a description and derivation of the pips, crowns and the other symbol seen on the general insigniae - does anyone know the history? Danlibbo 23:42, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

or i could do it Danlibbo 00:07, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another example of Betacommandbot Vandalism[edit]

A great example of Betacommandbot gone mad - tagging all the images of the rank insignia so that an admin has deleted them. The article has now lost all effect and usefulness. We have to reign in this idiot as wikipedia is being damaged by his actions.Krait (talk) 05:21, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Staff Cadet[edit]

The article states that staff cadet rank slides have a 10mm white stripe on their rank slides - this is not correct. Having recently been an inmate at RMC-D I can asure you that this is not the case, although perhaps it should be. RMC cadets (staff cadets) wear a blank rank slide with the 'RMC' flash. In this regard it is almost the same as a private, except that a private has a blank slide with the AUSTRALIA flash. I will include an image as soon as I get a chance to upload a photo. AustralianRupert (talk) 23:08, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The above images show RMC-D staff cadet rank slides for DPCU and 2E dress. The white tape referred to is only used at ADFA as far as I know. AustralianRupert (talk) 23:22, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I know this is old, however, yes the white bar is for ADFA, however the the white bar is not on the hardboards as is indicated in the table. The white bar is only on the soft rank slides for DPCUs and the Poly's. The hardboards have just "Australia" or they may have ADFA on them since the change to wear corps flashes on hardboards. Images[edit]

This article is now useless without images. Does anyone have the images that were removed? Can a rationale be written to include them again, otherwise there is little point in the article at all. I suppose photographs of slides could be provided, but to be honest I don't know any generals who'd let me take happy snaps of their rank slides for the purpose of adding to a wikipedia article. AustralianRupert (talk) 23:22, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, now I am confused. I have found some of the images that were deleted, being used in other articles (not having been deleted). For example Lieutenant General (Australia). Does this mean that if we were to add fair use rationales to these images for this article, that the images could be added back in? If so that would perhaps be a way of getting this article back up to a useful standard. AustralianRupert (talk) 14:21, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
First, have a look at File:Australian-Army-MAJGEN.gif. Then have a look at Ranks of the RAAF#Insignia
Starting at the top: "This article is now useless without images." - Agreed. "Does anyone have the images that were removed?" - Don't know. "Can a rationale be written ... " - I'm not an expert, but I don't see why not. But then again, I didn't see eye-to-eye with the disciples of Betacommandbot; I imagine they have other opinions. I'll see if I can find an expert to confirm my prejudices. "I suppose photographs of slides could be provided ... " - It would certainly simplify things on the WP copyright side! But as you point out: "I don't know any generals who'd let me take happy snaps of their rank slides" - No, but it does conjure up a set of amusing fantasy scenarios ;-)
"I have found some of the images" - sorry, I should have replied earlier. (They weren't lost ... ) "that were deleted" - Were they?! I wasn't aware of that. Hmmm. I see Krait's posting above was in March 08. "Does this mean ... " - Same answer as above (viz: I'm not an expert, but I don't see why not. But ... ) "If so ... " Yes. Maybe.
Have another a look at Ranks of the RAAF#Insignia
File:RAAF A Ranks.png is very small scale, and was created by User:Justinbrett in 2006, but he hasn't made a contribution since 21 Feb 2007, so the chances of him responding are pretty slim. User talk:Justinbrett is full of warnings, mostly put there by betacommandbot and OKBot in 2007 and early 2008.

The RAAF officers' insignia were mostly created by User talk:PalawanOz. Perhaps have a chat with him? Pdfpdf (talk) 16:03, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers for that. The RAAF ranks page is interesting. Looks like someone has gone to a lot of effort to make the officers ranks - wish I could do that for the Army ranks, but getting the pips, crowns and swords right, not to mention the flashes would take a virtual Microsoft Paint wizard, of which I am not. The enlisted ranks picture is, of course, a scan of the official ADF ranks recognition poster (I received one in my recruiting pack many moons ago), so I don't know how that goes down with the image police, but anyway...AustralianRupert (talk) 16:53, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
"Looks like someone has gone to a lot of effort ... " - Yes. User:PalawanOz is quite skilled - he's also created a pile of medal ribbons too. However, as you point out, the army insignia is considerably more "challenging"!
(BTW: I also set up the RAN Admirals' shoulder boards insignia File:RAN-Admiral-shoulder.gif)
For more data on acceptable FURs for insignia, you will find plentry attached to the insignia on the following pages:
List of comparative military ranks might also interest you. And Australian Defence Force ranks and insignia.
"The enlisted ranks picture is ... " - Yes. "so I don't know ... " - It doesn't / wouldn't. However, with such low resolution, it should be OK wih a different FUR.
(BTW: One copy of the poster you mentioned is at http://www.defence.gov.au/images/Badges_of_rank.pdf)

Sergeant Major and Officer cadet ain't in itSSJJ TSSJJ 01:29, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, GTA No. 1 fan. To my knowledge, Sergeant Major wouldn't be in it because it is not a rank, but an appointment filled by WO1s and WO2s (neither of which are "commissioned" officers, instead they are officers by "warrant"). Officer Cadet, however, should be included as it is a rank, one which an officer holds prior to commissioning (i.e. while at ADFA or RMC-D). — AustralianRupert (talk) 14:01, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
