Ward[edit]

I haven't been able to find any proof that Augustine Herman was married to a Mary Catherine Ward other than it being mentioned in Jasper Danckert's journal. If anyone has proof I would love to hear from them. Ellenward (talk) 14:30, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The geneology section needs work. In the paragraph mentioning his wife, only 2 sons are named, but in the section about Lords of Bohemia manor, the Fourth seems also mentioned as his son, although more likely the son of the Third (his grandson). Plus then the additional descendants section is enormous, without explanation, f.ex. claiming Virginia's Constitutional Convention delegate Edmund Randolph as a descendant (tho that article too doesn't explain his mother's backgroun). Accordingly, I'm mentioning the issue and removing the "son of" remark concerning the 4th Lord.Jweaver28 (talk) 05:18, 13 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ethnic german?[edit]

This book claims Herman, a German name not so much Czech, is of ethnic German descent: Nead (1980). The Pennsylvania-German in the Settlement of Maryland. Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. Both Herman and Heřman are not uncommon names among Czechs. The book itself claims "Although he was born at Prague, Bohemia, it is very probable that Herman was a German." Thats all. What is this statement based on? His name? The truth is we don't know what was his mother tongue or ethnicity. The only thing we know for sure is that he always claimed to be Bohemian. Thanks Qertis for responding so quickly. I'm not sure what the statement is based upon but it is the only published source, WP:RS, that I have found so far that references his ethnicity. My goal is to pay all due respects to the subject by characterizing him accurately. How should we proceed then? I imagine the two possibilities here are either his family were part of the German population, a minority I presume, living in Prague or his family was forced to adopt a more Germanic spelling of their name during the period of German language dominance from ~1600 to the 18th century[1] Citations either way would seem appropriate. --Hutcher (talk) 18:03, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

He could also be of mixed heritage. Anyway, we should leave this out of the lead ("was a Bohemian explorer ect." should be satisfactory) and mention his ethnic German background in the Early life section as a possibility not an undisputed fact. Qertis (talk) 22:00, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Birth Date[edit]

The article states that 1621 is the most reliable estimate for Herman's birth year, but it goes to claim that he was working as an agent for the West India Company in 1633.
