Kekule and Laurent[edit]

The new edits to this article reference the work of John Wotiz (d. 2002), who argued that Kekule plagiarized the idea of the benzene ring from Auguste Laurent. For a refutation of this assertion, please see O.B. Ramsay and A. J. Rocke, “Kekulé’s Dreams: Separating the Fiction from the Fact,” Chemistry in Britain, 20 (December 1984), 1093-94. This refutation has been endorsed by the historian of science John Brooke (Oxford University, emeritus), in the same edited book in which Wotiz made this argument, and also by many other professional historians of chemistry.
