Merge with Pluto[edit]

As of right now, there is nothing in this article that isn't in the Pluto article. It hasn't been substantially expanded, and likely won't be until 2015, so this article has no reason to exist. Serendipodous 15:21, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is now 2015, so it's probably a good idea for a sub-article to exist. -- 67.70.32.190 (talk) 06:50, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it does since 1 July [2015]. --JorisvS (talk) 13:45, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes - I agree - the article seems worth keeping imo atm - iac - Enjoy! :) Drbogdan (talk) 13:52, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pluto's atmosphere appears blue due to nitrogen gas?[edit]

@Kwamikagami: The lede presently contains the following uncited text => "The atmosphere appears blue due to the scattering of sunlight by nitrogen gas." - which seems to have been added by User:Kwamikagami on August 10, 2015 - the text may be true, a blue haze seems to surround Pluto, but a reference (couldn't find one in my recent searches) may be helpful I would think - iac - Enjoy! :) Drbogdan (talk) 12:52, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed it since no source has been provided. I am not overly happy about having the blue image in the article, since we do not know whether or not it is based on actual colour data from Ralph (and indeed whether it is true colour). I don't think the original plan called for colour data being returned from Pluto's nightside at this point. --Njardarlogar (talk) 09:06, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Njardarlogar: Thanks for the comments - yes - removing the uncited text seems ok with me atm as well - the image of Pluto surrounded in bluish haze was obtained from a NASA WebSite => https://blogs.nasa.gov/pluto/2015/08/10/atmospheric-escape-and-flowing-n2-ice-glaciers-what-resupplies-plutos-nitrogen/ - unclear if the haze is the actual color atm - iac - Thanks again for your comments - and - Enjoy! :) Drbogdan (talk) 12:42, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pressure[edit]

About "Even though Pluto is receding from the Sun, in 2002, the atmospheric pressure (0.3 Pa) was higher than in 1988" (added in 2009 by @Aza~enwiki:). I did not find this "0.3 Pa" in the cited source. This source is a popular review of this and this articles in Nature, where I also do not see this value. I see there curve "pressure vs distance from the center", which in combination with modern radius of Pluto (1187 km) gives value about 10 μbar (1 Pa) on the surface. Is this "0.3 Pa" really a mistake or, maybe, somebody has some explanation? Stas (talk) 01:26, 30 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

impressive detective work, the original article i referred to has been taken down, I'm not sure if the web archive is an accurate version of the article i referred to and I simply can't recall the process of writing the article. Now "0.3 Pa" has been written in books where the authors reffer to wikipedia, so we have cyclic logic. I'm of course pretty sure I was careful in creating the original article. As far as I recall the whole article was merged with the Pluto article a couple of years ago, and here to mu surprise it has been resurrected. this is probably just an elaborate way of saying "I have no idea" :-) aza (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 00:03, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for the comment. So, I will correct the article. Anyway, it has to be substantially modified in view of new data. Stas (talk) 21:21, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"in 1988... the atmospheric pressure was determined to be 0.15 Pa", "in 2002... The atmospheric pressure was estimated to be 0.3 Pa" - where are all these numbers from? I do not see them in the given sources, and actually occultation observations do not give directly surface pressure at all - it can be calculated only if composition of the atmosphere and Pluto's radius are known. In 1988 the composition was unknown, and in 2002 the radius remained unknown. Moreover, modern radius of Pluto (1187 km) combined with curves "pressure vs radius" in Sicardy et al., 2003 gives about 0.4 Pa for 1988 and 1 Pa for 2002. It seems, the article needs a serious rewriting. Stas (talk) 23:06, 8 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
