Atari![edit]

TOS doesn't execute from RAM, it is copied into RAM at startup, and runs from there. Will update this soon (if I can find a reference) Shalroth 14:51, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think you meant to say "TOS doesn't execute from ROM." But I am pretty sure it does (did): partly to conserve RAM for user programs and partly because reading from ROM was actually a few clocks faster than RAM on that hardware, unlike modern PCs. 76.21.111.20 (talk) 06:41, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's right. TOS does set up vectors in RAM but TOS itself is executed from ROM - If not being read from disk of course.

Forgive me. Typo. I meant to say 'TOS doesn't execute from ROM...' but I got that from the magazines of the time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shalroth (talkcontribs) 19:28, 7 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

TOS[edit]

TOS means Tramiel Operating System from the name of Atari Corp. President Jack Tramiel. It is one of the first windows-like desktop operating systems if not the first at all. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.109.75.214 (talk) 08:13, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A common miskate, but TOS actually stands for "The Operating System", for example quoted in the Atari Compendium[1]. Even though it was pretty early, Xerox and Apple came before GEM in TOS as shown in the timeline of GUIdebook[2].79.247.65.153 (talk) 18:38, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Program types[edit]

In addition to the rare app and TTP, I also saw GTP programs (GEM with parameters) on my last years on mega STE around 93/94 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.251.81.124 (talk) 13:55, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure about the dates/machine matchups for versions of TOS?[edit]

I have an Atari 1040 STE which I got new in either late 1991 or early 1992 (my senior year of high school). It came equipped with Rainbow TOS (the manual called it that). I'm confused that Rainbow TOS isn't listed as an OS option for the STE, and that Rainbow TOS seems to have been superseded by other versions of TOS well before I got my computer. Were 1.06 and 1.62 also referred to as Rainbow TOS by Atari? -- 24.16.4.92 (talk) 07:26, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
