Size of comic industry[edit]

"On page 31 Thomson and Thompson, from the famous Belgian comic strip Tintin, make an appearance. This also references the fact that Belgium has the largest comics industry next to the United States."

This statement appears to say that the United States has the largest comic industry in the world and Belgium has the second largest. Is this true? The comic industry in Japan is pretty big. Wouldn't it be better to say simply that many important (French language) comics originate in Belgium.

maybe: "largest producer of original comics in Europe" ? Japan's comic industry is massive (it's considered mainstream there so the manga sector alone is huge even before you include doijin (independent/underground titles))--Invisifan 12:48, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I guess from a French viewpoint, Belgium is somewhat of a lilliput country, although it did for some reason raise comics giants and innovators such as Hergé, Jijé and Franquin. It'd appear that France mostly raised draughtsmen, until around the 60's and 70's where Pilote and Metal Hurlant led an innovative wave in France as well. 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 00:41, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, I read an interview recently where a Belgian comics expert claimed that France and Germany had too much cultural baggage to pioneer a trashy children's medium such as comics, and subsequently the rather small Belgium happened to be the leading European pioneer between the 30's and the 60's. (I'm not sure exactly where I found the interview, and it was in Danish, anyway.) Brussels celebrates 2009 as the "year of the comic strip", with a major tourism-directed venture of all sorts of comic-related events. 惑乱 Wakuran (talk) 12:44, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Goscinny's writing[edit]

It says that Goscinny died when about two third of the comic was completed. In other words, the drawings were not finished, but what about the script? Had Goscinny completed the script, or was it Uderzo who took care of the rest?
