The name means place of fish in a Native American language (Iroquoian, by one source); see The World's Greatest Aqueduct: Water From The Catskill Mountains To The City Of New York for some details. AHMartin (talk) 20:46, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've found another source that says that "Sho-kan' was sometimes written Ashokan, and is now a village in Olive. It was called Shokaken in the Marhletown records of 1677, and was often mentioned. It may be derived from chogan, a black-bird, or sokan, to cross the creek, the last being preferable." [1][2] -- Gaurav (talk) 21:25, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
