Village?[edit]

The oddity with the 'village' claim is that if true, it makes Ashington undoubtedly the largest village in England, unless disqualified on other counts. And yet nobody is making such a claim. Morwen - Talk 17:10, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It seems ridiculous repeatedly toggling the status of Ashington from town to village. What's wrong with 'town/village'? Or perhaps a less controversial term such as 'settlement' or 'urban area'? Please do not toggle this back and forth unless you have evidence that you are correct (which may be impossible to find as there is no official definition of a village). I have lived in Ashington all of my life and i consider it to be a town, as do all of my friends/family (all Ashington Residents). Considering Ashington has 7 schools, a college, a football ground, a cricket ground, a rugby ground, 4 churches, 5 large supermarkets, 3 industrial estates with another currently under construction, 2 retail parks, a bus station equal in size to Newcastle Upon Tyne's Haymarket station, 20 pubs/clubs, 1 nightclub, one of the largest and most advanced hospitals in the north east and a large pedestrianized shopping precinct... That seems a bit much for a village to me, even the "largest village in England". While it is true Ashington was once referred to as the "largest mining village in the world", that was around 100 years ago. Ashington has since expanded both in size and amenities a great deal, I'd also like to point out that in local newspapers and tv reports Ashington is always refered to as a town, if anyone is still in doubt over the town/village debate i invite you to visit the official Ashington website [1] which refers to Ashington as a town. Population[edit]

Railway Station[edit]

I think that reopening Ashington train station would be a good idea because it would improve links to Newcastle, and Tyneside. It would be good for the local economy by providing jobs and it would make it easier for people to travel around south east Northumberland and Tyneside [1]. What could work would be to extend the metro network to link towards Backworth, Blyth and Ashington. Another idea could be to upgrade the line passing Linton which joins the east coast mainline near Butterwell opencast. This could not be Metro but it would be part of the British Rail network. This option would be cheaper as the line from Ashington Station via Linton to the mainline at Butterwell Junction is only about 3 miles and idea seen from Google Earth. Services would then connect Ashington to Newcastle, Morpeth, Alnwick. The only disadvantage with this option is that there would be no links to Blyth and north Tyneside but still it would give Ashington its rail service back. Hi, and firstly thanks for your hard work on this article. You have provided a very large amount of interesting additional information, but we do need to make sure that it is all encylopedic, particularly verifiable. I don't doubt that your thoughts above are good ones, but that does not make them encyclopedic. My comment that the statement re there being calls for re-opening of the line needing a reference stands. If you have not already, please could you read the following: WP:VERIFY, WP:NPOV, WP:OR. Local knowledge, "word on the street", etc are not sufficient on their own, you need to provide a reference to a published source. Halsteadk (talk) 14:10, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
