Proposed Revert

It is my understanding that the hill is more renowned by the name Thiruvannamalai (Thiru + Annamalai). The term Arunachala returns more results in Google because the term Arunachala may refer to the hill or the deity Arunachala(Arunachaleshwarar is the name of the deity Shiva of the Annamaliyar temple often called Arunachala) or to some extent also alludes to the Indian state with a similar name - Arunachal Pradesh. The name Arunachala is more often used to refer the deity and not the hill by the locals. I suggest that the move from Annamalai Hill to Arunachala be reverted. Moreover, I hate to judge the names by Google result count but because it was projected as the cause for the initial move I am projecting this. As of now, Google comes back with

Greetings, Sethie. I strongly support you on this. I understand the argument for the Annamalai Hill article name (Tamil/Skt origin of words, the Hill being in Tamil Nadu) ... but I think the vast majority of people who are aware of this Hill know the Hill as Arunachala. (And this is supported by your google hits info.) The fact that the Hill is usually known as Arunachala in the sacred texts is also very relevant to this. Iddli (talk) 18:24, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

I really like the idea of having a link to the webcam ... My concern is that the webcam page is linked to information related to accommodations in Tiru. It seems to be a service pointing people toward clean rooms, etc but I am not sure if it violates any policy to add the webcam link to the Arunachala article as it stands now. I will try writing to the site owner and seeing if he/she would be willing to create a stand-alone page for the webcam which is not not linked to anything else. Thanks for the excellent suggestion! Sethie is open to webcam, in fact, he votes to include it. It might be "better" if there were no commercial links, and on that webpage there is only one link and it is more of a resource for travellers. Sethie (talk) 21:26, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Arunachala → Annamalai –

It is my understanding that the hill is more renowned by the Tamil name Thiruvannamalai (Thiru + Annamalai). The term Arunachala returns more results in Google because the term Arunachala may refer to the hill or the deity Arunachala(Arunachaleshwarar is the name of the deity Shiva of the Annamaliyar temple often called Arunachala) or to some extent also alludes to the Indian state with a similar name - Arunachal Pradesh. The name Arunachala is more often used to refer the deity and not the hill by the locals. I suggest that the move from Annamalai Hill to Arunachala be reverted on the basis that the term Annamalai unambiguously refers the hill whilst the term Arunachala is ambiguous. In an unrelated example, the Tirumala temple's historical tamil name is Thirumalai, but it is referred to in Wikipedia by its local language(telugu) name - Tirumala

1. The town - Thiruvannamalai derives its name from the name of the mountain - Annamalai

2. The Thiruvannamalai temple website references the hill as Annamalai [1]

3. Arunachala is the sanskrit name and Annamalai is the tamil name which is how it is renowned locally. The Thirumala example in the original proposal was to underscore this

I wanted the article to reflect its popular name and Annamalai is what I see as much popular. I feel that it should be the other way round where Arunachala is mentioned in the lead section whilst the article itself is named Annamalai. Mr.Falcon (talk) 16:35, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
