Was Arthur's catchphrase "I thank you" or "I thank you all / y'all"?[edit]

Arthur's catchphrases were first added to this article a few months after its creation in 2004. The phrase in question was written as 'I thank you', and stayed that way until 2010, when an anonymous editor changed it to 'I thank y'all'. Attempts to revert to 'I thank you' have been resisted, without explanation.

I would suggest that 'I thank you' is correct for several reasons:

  • Y'all is not commonly used in British English
  • The name of Arthur Askey's 1941 film is 'I Thank You', and was clearly so called after his catchphrase
  • There is no 'l' sound detectable in recordings of Askey delivering this catchphrase. It sounds more like a 'w'.

By way of illustration, I've uploaded an audio extract of Arthur saying 'I thank you' in the early minutes of the film 'I Thank You'.

In furtherance of Richard Ingram'S perceptive and persuasive observation that Askey and the Queen Mother had never been seen in the same room together, it is well known, and there is photographic evidence to support it, that the lady tied her own flies, and while there is no longer any visual evidence, clearly Askey also fastened his own flies. Although this evidence msy be categorised as merely 'circumstantial', in a Court of British Law, it could be argued that it is still evidence. Which war?[edit]

He served in the armed forces in World War II

Are you sure you don't mean WW1? I can remember a shot of him in WW1 uniform, but I don't know whether he was sent abroad. BY WW2 he was already famous in showbusiness, and would have been used for entertaining troops and civilians. Valetude (talk) 01:12, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

By the Fast Show as ‘Arthur Atkinson’, several times. Clever mix of faux catchphrases (‘Where’s me washboard?’, ‘How queer!’) and incomprehensible Cockney references (‘Oh! Ghost train photo[edit]

I'm positive that the other male actor is actually Richard Murdoch. in the scene, Peter hill-murray only appears when he stands in front of Murdoch, and his coat has epaulettes, which Murdoch's does not! 2.222.236.87 (talk) 14:13, 21 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I added this photo, and labelled it using the (Spanish) information from the Wikimedia Commons image, not having watched the film. However, you're quite right, it is Richard Murdoch. The Commons image source links to a viewable version of the film, and around the 11 minute mark it is quite clearly Murdoch. I have corrected the WP article, sorry about that.
