I thought English recognized data as a singular noun, not plural, like it is in Latin. Please correct me if I am wrong.

"The data were acquired through three different filters (B, V, and R) for a total exposure time of 4440 seconds."

Not so speculative any more, the predicted collision mentioned in the article has had some serious corroboration:
