1890 census[edit]

Does anybody have access to the 1890 census? I don't see how over 7,000 people could've lived here in 1890. Today, Loyalsock Township has population over 10,000. Perhaps a population of over 1,000 fits Armstrong better? I've looked for more accurate info with little success. I think that 7k is an error from the scanning of the Meginnes book. Another thought is that the census included, South Williamsport and Duboistown in the census figures for Armstrong. Dincher (talk) 01:31, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

South Williamsport was incorporated in 1886 and DuBoistown in 1878 combined they have a population around 8,000 today. In 1890 far less land was developed within the boroughs. I doubt they could have had 7,000 even counting the rest of Armstrong Township in 1890. Armstrong Township had more farms in 1890 and perhaps it included more of what is now DuBoistown and South Williamsport, but I don't think it could have had more than 1000 people. It has less than that today and more developed areas (though not much). A common way, though not common in the US now, to make handwritten "1" is to write what you and I'd describe as a tent and we'd easily interpret as a "7". Misinterpretted handwriting could be the source of the discrepancy. Amd194 (talk) 14:21, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have looked up Armstrong Township in the 1890 census at http://www2.census.gov/prod2/decennial/documents/1890b3_p1-08.pdf on the 50th page. 385 people lived in Armstrong Township in 1890. 1431 lived there in 1880, South Williamsport was removed from the township in the interim.

Thanks for looking the info up. I have removed mention of the decline in population. It's not a big deal dropping from 1,000 to 700, it was a big deal with the drop from 7,000 to 700! Dincher (talk) 19:01, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much. It seems to be an "adding 1 in front of the number error" then reading that 1 as a 7 as the Meginness online version here says "Armstrong township is the eighteenth in size in the county and contains 13,440 acres, with a population of 7,385 by the census of 1890." I think it was an optical character recognition / scanning error. The same online version of Meginness also will sometimes have "crook" for "creek" or "bum" for "burn", other common OCR errors. PS I Plan to double check a print version of Meginness in a few days. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:22, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I double checked the original 1890 Meginness and a modern reprint and they both gave it as "7,385". Good catch. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 22:14, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
