Same series or spinoff?[edit]

What is the rationale for considering this show to be the same series as All In The Family? It has a different format and a largely different cast of characters. To my way of thinking, this is the same as saying AfterMASH is the same series as M*A*S*H or that Three's a Crowd is the same series as Three's Company. They're not the same. Archie Bunker's Place should be considered a spinoff of All In The Family - not a retooling of the same series. Applejuicefool 21:18, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it is a different show...Saying otherwise would be to say that all five Law & Order series are all the same show. The plots are also tremendously different, much due to content. Michael 00:55, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The fact remains, however, that some people and sources - including "The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network TV Shows: 1946-Present" - consider All in the Family and Archie Bunker's Place to be one and the same. The paragraph in the AITF's entry regarding its change/spinoff creation (whatever you consider it) starts, "During the 1979-1980 season the program grew even further away from its original format, as the action shifted to Archie's Bar." After going into detail about those changes, the last sentence reads "Coincident with these changes, in the fall of 1979, the name of the series was changed to Archie Bunker's Place. This is one possible source where this "Is it a spinoff or continuation of the original series" debate began (and apparently, still persists). I don't think the Law & Order example is relevant; those are franchised shows and not considered the same series, although Applejuicefool's examples are more valid. Both series say Based on Till Death Us Do Part, so therefore, Archie Bunker's Place is considered as the spin-off, but it's the continuing story of All in the Family. King Shadeed 23:36, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I watched both All in the Family and Archie Bunker's Place, and at the time I didn't consider it a spin-off, more just a retooling of the show with a new name. Technically, it's a spin-off, yes.--RLent (talk) 21:30, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What's going on here?[edit]

"In addition to the 1979 episode "Thanksgiving Reunion," Struthers returned in the 1982 two-part episode, "Gloria Comes Home," where she returns home from California with her son, Joey after divorcing Mike (who had run off to a commune with a comely co-ed)."

Hello? There's an episode of either "All in the Family" or "Archie Bunker's Place", before Edith dies (I think), where we see the end of Mike and Gloria's marriage. Gloria has no career of her own, and chafes at having to stay at home and raise their son. As a result, she cheats on Mike. This is what destroys their marriage. Again, I saw this episode, and it remains clear in my mind. This needs to be addended or corrected. WilliamSommerwerck (talk) 22:31, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that was an episode of AITF in which the Bunkers learned Glorida had cheated but her and Mike reconciled. They came to visit the Bunkers a year later in 1980 for Thanksgiving but their marriage was on the rocks. The finally divorced a year later in 1982 when Mike left Gloria for a flower girl. Jean Stapleton's Departure[edit]

The article states this: "Jean Stapleton had resigned from her role due to her being frustrated with appearing in only six episodes of the first season of Archie Bunker's Place." This implies that Stapleton wanted to be on the show more often, but someone (the producers? the network?) prevented it. I've always read that Stapleton's diminished role, and her eventual departure from the series, were HER decisions. I've read that she felt she had done as much with the role as possible, and wanted to phase herself out of the show. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.131.131.169 (talk) 04:40, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hulu[edit]

I think "However, some third season episodes are available on Hulu." should be removed since the only CLIPS on Hulu have expired. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Antibeachbunny (talkcontribs) 17:51, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
