Bad Move

Somebody tried to move this page to Aralsk by a code copy-paste. It should be done with the move button to preserve the page history. That operation will now require an admin. It should be posted at WP:RM to be moved properly.

Maybe it should be discussed as well? Aralsk is the translation of the Russian name, while Aral is the translation of the Kazakh name, which I think is more appropriate, since hardly any Russians live there. The people who live there actually respond quite negatively when people say "Aralsk" rather than "Aral". I won't make a big deal out of it, but that was my rationale for naming it "Aral" in the first place. Staecker 11:41, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Awkward sentence

"It has been more than 25 years since the Aral Sea could be seen from the town." - this sentence does not carry any meaning. Obviously the author's intention was to note that "...more than 25 years since the Aral Sea could not be seen from the town." referring to the dried-up Aral sea. --J-Scythian (talk) 12:29, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

It sounds perfectly fine to me. Today the Aral Sea can not be seen from the town. 25 years ago, it could be seen from the town. That was 25 years ago, so it has been 25 years since the Sea could be see from the town. Your version implies that the Sea currently can be seen, and that 25 years ago it could not. I've just reverted a change which included the word "not", and made the sentence quite wrong, implying that 25 years ago the sea became visible. I don't know what J-Scythian's natural language is (there's no user page to hint at this) but I wonder if this is based on the common odd use of "since" amongst foreign speakers? Even ABBA did it in Fernando: "...and since many years I haven't seen a rifle in your hand". Incidentally, having just been to Aral three weeks ago, I can confirm that there's not a trace of the sea to be seen ;-( – Kieran T ^(talk) 12:40, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

You are right Kierant, the word "since" in the context of the sentences was misleading. I think the sentence has to be rephrased into somewhat simplier English like "For the last 25 years the sea cannot be seen from the town", otherwise it is confusing for a general non-native English speaker reader.
