Charles of Valois, the French claimant to the Aragonese throne was the son of Philip III of France, not his brother. Also the Charles of Anjou who had engineered the accession of Pope Martin IV was Charles I of Sicily, the uncle of Philip III and the great-uncle of Charles of Valois. I've commented out rather than removing the references to the accession of Martin IV as Charles of Sicily's support of Martin was indeed one of the factors in the offer of the crown of Aragon to Charles of Valois - but by a rather longer chain of causes than the article was implying.

That was my error. The Valois claims and the papal-Valois connection need to be expanded, more correctly than I'm able to do, in order to clarify the politics underlying the Aragonese Crusade, as a clearer guide to readers like me. --11:20, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
I have started a new article on the War of the Sicilian Vespers: it's a stub at the moment, but hopefully can be expanded to explain the connections between the Aragonese Crusade and the closely related conflicts in Italy during the same period. PWilkinson 19:36, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
