etymology[edit]

The name means either "single finger" or "simple finger" (Greek haploos / aploe + daktylos). [Sourced to Fishbase, depending on whether you look at Aplodactylidae or Aplodactylus-punctatus]

Answered my own question: C&V called it simple-finger, but this was obviously misunderstood, because someone later attempted to "correct" the spelling to haplodactylus. And fishbase is just one source that still hasn't figured it all out (unless the proposer of the family name really was labouring under a contrary understanding from the originators of the genus name).Cesiumfrog (talk) 23:30, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
