Misspelled first name in title[edit]

Unfortunately, the first name in the title, "Anthonid," is misspelled and should be "Anthonie." This may be a simple typo, or maybe there is some source giving the corrupted spelling. In any case, let me present the evidence.

The grandfather of the person in the article (after whom he was named) was the Dutch poet and philologist Anthonie Cornelis Oudemans Sr. who had three sons, all of whom became noted natural scientists, and all of whom he gave (or tried to give) French Christian names. The father of the person in the article was the noted "colonial" astronomer Jean Abraham Chrétien Oudemans, who married the mother Pauline Adriana Verdam (daughter of a mathematics professor) in 1856. They had several children. (See Pyenson,L. (1989) Empire of Reason: Exact Sciences in Indonesia, 1840-1940, p. 20 ff.[1]). Unfortunately, this source does not name the names of the children. However, if one searches with the names "Oudemans" and "Verdam" (further particulars confuse the issue apparently) in the Dutch genealogical database genlias.nl one finds J.A.C. Oudemans in a number of records from the Dutch Registry of Marriages concerning the two marriages of his son Anthonie Cornelis Oudemans (in 1887 and 1919) and also his death certificate of "14-01-1943" (January 14, 1943), as stated in the article. He was first married to Helena Johanna van de Velde on May 12, 1887 in Zutphen, and after he became a widower, with Aletta Amelia Louise Pilgrim on August 19, 1919 in Arnhem. These may be useful biographical data to add to the article.

The reason I became suspicious was that "Anthonid" is an evident corruption of a possible Dutch first name: "Antonides" (without an h). This Greek name would be Anglicized to "Antonid" (again without an h), as in the founder of the Hellenistic dynasty. As "Antonides" would be theoretically possible (though I found no trace of him calling himself that) I had to check the official records and they show without doubt that "Anthonie" (with an e) is the correct first name. The 1887 marriage registry entry shows a common variant spelling of this name ("Antonie"). This is not really a misspelling, but not how he was registered.

I found that he often gave his full name as "A.C. Oudemans Jzn." This can be explained as follows: In the Netherlands the convention was often followed to name the firstborn son after the paternal grandfather. This however, applied to every one of A.C. Oudemans Sr.'s three sons. Apparently, therefore, there was more than one A.C. Oudemans at the same level in the family and they had to be differentiated. It was in such cases usual to add the informal patronymic "Janzoon", abbreviated "Jzn."

Unfortunately, the original author of this article seems to be unregistered (I could only find an IP-adres). I hope therefore that one of the other contributors to the article will do the honors of changing the title.--Ereunetes (talk) 21:54, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
