USS Chandler[edit]

Here is a statement from the obituary cited in this article: "He earned a bachelor's degree from Loyola College in 1950 and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War, serving in combat aboard the destroyers USS Putnam and USS Chandler."

We have two articles for USS Chandler:

  • "The USS Chandler (DD-206), was a Clemson-class destroyer, commissioned in 1919, served in World War II and decommissioned in 1945."
  • "The USS Chandler (DDG-996), was a Kidd-class destroyer, commissioned in 1982 and decommissioned in 1999. She was transferred to Taiwan."

We also have an article for USS Theodore E. Chandler (DD-717), which states: "USS Theodore E. Chandler (DD-717) was a Gearing-class destroyer in the United States Navy during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. She was named for Theodore E. Chandler. Theodore E. Chandler was laid down on 23 April 1945 at Kearny, New Jersey, by the Federal Shipbuilding Company; launched on 20 October 1945; sponsored by Mrs. Theodore E. Chandler; and commissioned on 22 March 1946, Commander Francis O. Fletcher, Jr., in command."

So, I am going to disambiguate the current link to USS Chandler by pointing it to USS Theodore E. Chandler (DD-717). Any concerns with this, please let me know. KConWiki (talk) 13:30, 12 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On second thought, re-reading that sentence, the obit could have been referring to either DD-206 or DD-217. So, I am going to put up a disambguation needed tag instead. KConWiki (talk) 13:36, 12 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK, sorry, one more time. The obit sentence preceding the one I quoted above gives further context: "After graduating from Polytechnic Institute in 1945, Mr. Burns enlisted in the Navy during the waning days of World War II and served as a cryptographer aboard the attack cargo ship USS Washburn. He earned a bachelor's degree from Loyola College in 1950 and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War, serving in combat aboard the destroyers USS Putnam and USS Chandler." So, I think we should point this towards USS Theodore E. Chandler (DD-717). (Hope I don't get into a revert war with myself.) KConWiki (talk) 13:41, 12 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
