Popular Culture[edit]

I added the stub-section on Popular Culture to give an example from modern times. Further examples are welcome. One possible example is in Over the Hedge (film), when R.J. the Raccoon sees the foragers trapped by the pest control man, and with heavy-handed dialogue from Vincent the Bear, feels the full impact of what he has done. It remains a comedy because R.J. doesn't allow this realization to control his future actions, but instead seizes the opportunity to become the "better person" he was initially only pretending to be (but secretly wishing he could be). --BlueNight 07:50, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Spoilers[edit]

Pretty much all spoilers? Most of the examples given are either from the classical, or are classics in themselves, where the story or text is well known anyway. The Sixth Sense[edit]

I have to say it is sad to see a mention of the film Sixth Sense on a page about anagnorisis. Based on a reading of Aristotle it is safe to say he would have thought The Sixth Sense complete trash because it goes against just about everything Aristotle holds in esteem in Poetics. As a matter of fact, the Sixth Sense type of anagnorisis would be a good example of what Aristotle did not mean when he extolled the merits of anagnorisis! Donnie Darko?[edit]

Guy wakes up from dream and it saves his life (plane nearly smashed his head), goes trough weird events (seeing strange bunny, flooding(?) school, ...), and realizes he hasn't woken up. He dies just like in a dream (beheaded ???).

Why? On the beginning You know what probably hapenned ("was it a dream"). You get dream-like situations and "cover-up" ("he's been weird since crash" + "meet psychiatrist"). The end was surprised me ;)

Inclusion of modern examples of anagnorisis[edit]

Also in the example given about star war, darth vader IS luke skywalker.. go to movie websites to verify this. Luke skywalker become darth vader after losing his mother to some desert creatures and kill them all, the whole tribe, and from then begin his descent into darkness as he also later on kill all children training to become jedis. He ends up becoming too close to governor Palatin whos goal all along was to initiate him to the dark force, by making him believe he could save his wife by doing so. He ends up jealous trying to kill her, and burned in fire after a fight with the jedi who had formed him.. but is saved by palatin, who take him entirely to his side, and use teh very strong power that luke has. And this is the reason why darth vader wear an armor and a mask he can never remove, as his face and body were totally burned down, and cannot breathe normally, and breath as he does, and need oxygen (all his skin burned and the skin is a breathing organ)due to consequences of the burns. The one that fights darth vader, is the son of darth vader, the son of luke skywalker, who was born from luke's wife, together with a sister, after luke was left for dead in this vulcan planet, and who died herself while giving birth (luke's wife). Luke skywalker future as the leader of the dark side was predestined and prophetise by the higher jedis, who could feel a contradiction in him from when he was a small child, the first time he was brought in front of them. The father of luke skywalker had died long long ago, long before he was discovered by jedis as a little 5 years old child on the planet he was living into. His father had hide him there with his mother so that he will not be killed, but died himself while they lived there. The death of luke's mother was orchestrated by governor Palatin to cause a reversal of Luke's character and raise his anger and make him commit crimes forbidden for a jedi. I dont know who wrote that skywalker discover that his father was darth vader as an anagnorisis, but that person never understood star war.. That part is very clearly exposed and explained in star war. The anagnorisis occur when the son of luke skywalker realise that his father Luke never died on this vulcan planet, but survived, thanks to Palatin, and was formed by Palatin into the dark side of the force, and leaded the dark force, and is darth vader. It is also the moment when Darth Vader turn his dark force against palatin and kill him instead to kill his son, when he realise that his wife died but tha the had 2 children which Palatin had hide from him by making him believe that they died at birth. So there is a double anagnorisis occuring at the same time, for Luke Skywalker/Darth Vader and his son. It is the alone story, movie, where oyu do have a double anagnorisis. A real tragedy, with a good ending even if he dies in the arms of his son. So let makes this clear again, Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker. The empire strike back show it, but look too the episodes before to understand why. It is clear that the anachronological way the episodes of star war were made, do not help in the comprehension of the story, as the story line gets very intricate, more than necessary, at time.

I came here looking for an explanation about why the Star Wars example was considered dubious, and this appears to be it. It's got a ton of fundamental issues: it's really wrong about Star Wars lore, it confuses Luke Skywalker and Anakin Skywalker, it misspells Palpatine throughout, and it's more focused on trying to summarize the plot of Star Wars than discuss the actual topic.
