June 22, 2013: The Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony was officiated by Honorable Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology on behalf of His Excellency President Yahya Jammeh, who as a young army officer took power in a coup in 1984 and was elected president in 1996, reelected in 2001, 2006 & 2011. Founder of the J.T.P Jammeh, foundation for peace. Took place in the new state of the art complex to the house of the ministry of foreign affairs in a ceremony held at marina parade in Benjul in presence of Senior government officials, business leaders, faculty,staff and students of AIU.

The Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony was followed by depositing a Time Capsule to be opened after 25 years. This was the first time a Time Capsule is deposited in The Gambia.
