Contested deletion[edit]

This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because I'm only just getting started and will soon establish notability. Andrew D. (talk) 13:12, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This article has just been started by someone at the Wikipedia:Meetups/UK/Black Cultural Archives, and is still being worked on.Leutha (talk) 13:28, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because... she has been called "Britain’s first and most distinguished black textile designer". Her works have been widely publicized. myriad of sourcing, multiple works are owned by Victoria and Albert Museum [1], "Althea's first produced design in 1959, Golden Harvest, was Hull Traders' best-selling line" and her works were "featured in the exhibition RCA Black organised by The Royal College of Art" [2]. Creator has barely had time to work on the article, absolute nonsense that this was even nominated before a REASONABLE creation period has lapsed. SusunW (talk) 15:44, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because it does assert notability. Whether it's notable or not should be handled at AfD, not by fiat. --Adam Cuerden (talk) 19:34, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Adam Cuerden, Christian75, Leutha, and SusunW: Thanks for the support everyone. Please note that any of you are free to remove the speedy deletion tag without any ceremony per the detailed tag instructions. I would have done it myself already but, as the article creator, I'm the one editor who is not supposed to do this. I'll be happy to reciprocate if you should ever need such assistance yourself. If Leutha does it, I'll buy him a drink at the London Meetup tomorrow. :) Andrew D. (talk) 20:14, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Never mind – while I was typing all that, SusanW kindly took care of it. Many thanks. Andrew D. (talk) 20:19, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I couldn't get to it earlier Andrew Davidson. I was in the middle of a Good Article review so I added some sources and figured I could come back to it. Your best solution to avoid prods is to select "Special:Mypage/ARTICLE NAME" as the option when you are creating a page. Then you can make whatever adjustments you need to notability, sources, etc. before moving it to the mainspace. Just make sure when you have finished the article you do move it :) I'll keep an eye on her and if you need/want help, just ping me. SusunW (talk) 20:26, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And for the record, go ahead and get Leutha that pint. Yucatán's a wee bit too far from London for you to give it to me :) SusunW (talk) 20:47, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ok. It will probably be a pint of London Pride. As for the other sort of drafts, I don't usually like to work in sandboxes or other provisional workspaces. I find it especially important to start in mainspace during editathons so that it's clear to everyone that the topic is being worked on. Otherwise, you can waste time duplicating the work of another editor who is working from the same shortlist of red links. To minimise disruption by the NPP, I usually ensure that the first version has enough sources to impress them. In this case, I fluffed it by pressing save rather than preview when I was assembling the first draft. Still, it's good to experience the annoyance caused to good faith newbies by such reactions. The patroller in this case put a speedy deletion tag on the topic within 4 minutes, contrary to WP:NPPNICE. I can cope with this but many newbies would struggle to cope. It will make a good talking point at tomorrow's wikimeet ... Andrew D. (talk) 20:58, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Andrew Davidson indeed it will. It is extremely frustrating how quickly those deletion tags get thrown out and as you say, discouraging for newcomers. I'd love to see statistics on it, but there don't appear to be any to who the most likely targets are. I always start in draft and just note on whatever list for creation that I am working on it. That usually has worked for me and only twice have I had a duplication result. Good luck on your meetup and thanks for adding a Caribbean woman. I've been working on many of them these last few weeks. Lots of really notable women whose stories are untold outside of the islands. SusunW (talk) 21:54, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Leutha and SusunW: The barmaid pulled a pint of London Pride but studied it critically and decided that it was too cloudy. So, Leutha got a pint of Doom Bar instead. Cheers! Andrew D. (talk) 22:21, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Andrew Davidson and SusunW:. . . and a very nice pint it was too, thanks Andrew. Leutha (talk) 23:51, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Andrew Davidson and Leutha: Glad you enjoyed it no matter what kind it was. Creating a better world one kind deed and one pint at a time :) SusunW (talk) 00:23, 15 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Leutha and SusunW: This is a good time to revisit this topic because the subject has sadly died recently. I've nominated them for RD at WP:ITN/C. There's a slight mystery about her age because the news report says she was age 95 but we have her born around 1933 ("When she travelled to England in 1951 at the age of 18"). I'm also pinging @MassiveEartha: who may have good access to more sources at the Black Cultural Archives. Andrew🐉(talk) 22:49, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Leutha, SusunW, and Andrew Davidson: Thanks for the ping Andrew. I'm really sorry to hear that Althea McNish has died. Like everywhere else, BCA is closed during lockdown. Unfortunately, she's not included in the main reference books I have at home: Recordings: A Select Bibliography of Contemporary African, Afro-Caribbean and Asian British Art (1996) and Companion to Contemporary Black British Culture (2002). However, I know @Proscribe: has made a number of contributions to the article and I'm sure they'll keep an eye on the Trinidadian press for any clarity on her DOB. MassiveEartha (talk) 23:25, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've checked the press from here (we get different stuff in a search engine than you might in the UK) but find nada. I also did a records search but find nada. We're in isolation here in Mexico as well, but I'll keep an eye out to see if I can find anything. SusunW (talk) 14:54, 20 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
