Althea & Donna[edit]

Can someone with more knowledge than I, create a link from the, often mis-quoted, reference of "Althia & Donna" ? The alternative spelling does already appear - more than once - elsewhere in Wikipedia. Thanks,

Did you mean that someone should create a redirect? I just did, thanks for the tip! (Follow that link if you want to know how to do it yourself.) --Grace 07:27, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The existence of the alternate spelling may well derive from Top of the Pops. In recent weeks BBC Four has transmitted four TOTP shows featuring or at least mentioning A&D. In the first two of these (when they were placed respectively 2 and 1 in the chart) they were captioned in the chart rundown with the 'e' spelling, the next two (placed respectively 3 and 7) with the 'i' spelling. Given that the alteration occurred 'towards' the 'i' spelling, I would take a long deep breath before assuming which spelling is the wrong one. Harfarhs (talk) 18:01, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The label of the single uses the "Althia & Donna" spelling. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.44.231.217 (talk) 22:49, 16 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Uptown Top Ranking[edit]

I created redirects for Up Town Top Ranking and Uptown Top Ranking to lead to this page, but as the song is on a list of requested Wikipedia articles, it may still be appropriate to make a separate page for the song. Do so at your leisure! --Grace 07:32, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Two and a half years later, it appears our leisure time is growing ! Actually, to try to split Althea & Donna from the song is rather like splitting the horse and the cart. Neither is much good without the other ! I have recently vigorously edited this article, and hopefully it keeps both camps happy. I think to split this up, we would effectively end up with two small stubs with little chance of real expansion of either of them. Unless, of course, someone, somewhere feels differently - Be Bold !

Portishead covered "Uptown Top Ranking" in the late '90s. - Source?[edit]

Title says everything. Sadly the german Wikipedia couldn't provide any source but I'm interested in hearing that track. Maybe it goes by a different title and not "Uptown Top Ranking"..? I couldn't find the track on any of Portisheads CDs which were released before the year 2000. Neither could i find any remix with that title. -- 193.247.17.17 (talk) 14:45, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I could not find any evidence of this either, and without a reference in the article, the sentence has been removed. If anyone feels like re-inserting it, PLEASE find a citation to support it. It is unsourced information like this, that gives Wikipedia a bad name in some quarters. Thanks,

"Top Ranking"[edit]

Does anyone have any idea what kind of activity "Top Ranking" might have been? Could it have been anything to do with Top Rank Records? -- 188.28.249.199 (talk) 15:08, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I would be interested what the text is about. Does Anybody know something about it or understand the lyrics? --88.72.47.84 (talk) 14:48, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing to do with Top Rank Records. In a nutshell it is about 'strictly roots' women from the rough side of town, going out in style in the 'uptown' areas and attending 'top rank' venues. Wearing 'khaki suits and ting', innocently causing heart attacks and having a good time. You may need a Anglo Jamaican for a full translation ! Cracking good song though.

Nothing to do with Top Rank records or 'uptown areas' of town. It means going to one of a chain of nightclubs that were popular in the UK at that time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Rank_Suite Robert P Connolly (talk) 09:10, 3 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Alternate version?[edit]

I feel certain that I once heard broadcast a version of 'Uptown..' that was noticeably rougher and earthier than the chart version (but still credited to A&D). Perhaps this was a demo, in which case the radio presenter may have had privileged access to it; but does anyone else recall this, and if so whether it was released in any format? Harfarhs (talk) 18:08, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think they recorded it originally for Joe Gibbs in 1977 and re-recorded it with Karl Pitterson in 1978, which is the one on the UK album. Maybe it's the Joe Gibbs version you're thinking of? Joe Gibbs version: [1], Karl Pitterson version: [2]. --Michig (talk) 18:31, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant! Thanks very much. :) Harfarhs (talk) 21:20, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
