Health Minister[edit]

I removed this from the article:

"While health minister, Rock ignored deceit by Health Canada employees concerning work the department had done to protect Canadians with sensitivities from being killed in health care settings. As a result of this coverup, somewhere between a half-dozen and a few dozen Canadians with sensitivities are killed every day."

I don't know anything about these accusations, but if they are true and should be in the article, it needs to be re-written in a more neutral, encyclopedic tone. Liamdaly620 20:06, 22 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Someone is confusing the expression of a difficult and unflattering truth with an absence of neutrality. info@ages.ca

Conversation with Marc Kelly[edit]

This event is hardly notable at the current time and including it with sole reference to the personal blog of Marc Kelly is hardly consistent with Wikipedia guidelines on biographies of living persons. 137.122.68.195 (talk) 23:36, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I concur that this section is poorly referenced and does not use neutral language. I recommend its removal entirely (please note, I know nothing about the case or the people involved). Aphra (talk) 18:27, 24 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification, I think that this particular part be removed "On Monday, November 3, 2008, Kelly entered Rock's office, unannounced and without an appointment, to request a meeting to discuss a complaint he felt had been unfairly dealt with. Upon entering President Rock's office, Kelly immediately informed Mr. Rock that he had not received a response to his e-mail, at which point Rock slamed his fist violently on his desk, stood up and started charging towards Kelly, raising his voice and repeatedly demanding that Kelly leave his office. Kelly continued to press Mr. Rock for an answer as to when Rock would respond to his e-mail and did not leave Rock's office until a full minute later, when Rock told Kelly "you'll get it [the response] when you get it. Thank you. Goodbye." Kelly recorded the entire conversation without Rock's knowledge." It is clearly not neutral language, gives personal POV, and no relevant citation. Page contributors - Objectivity questioned[edit]

Since 2008, the most frequent page editors have been identified as Denis G. Rancourt (denisgrancourt) and Marc Kelly (MarcKelly), both of whom have ongoing personal, academic, and professional conflicts with Allan Rock.

Their postings simply cannot be accepted as neutral. The section regarding the Kelly/Wolfe arrests has only a tenuous connection to the main article, despite Rancourt's excessive citations. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.224.103.137 (talk) 14:15, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The content that I have contributed is accompanied by references using reliable sources, can be checked, and is objective and relevant to the sections where it was added. The references show that the content is newsworthy and reliable. The references show that Rock is directly implicated in the matters of Wolfe and Kelly. The same pattern is seen in the matter of Hickey. Denis.g.rancourt (talk) 02:36, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the "Objectivity questioned/Neutrality questioned" tag. I agree that the information is relevant to the sections where it was added, and there are many sources referenced. The user MarcKelly does not currently have any posts on any part of this article. SeosamhH (talk) 23:22, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Warnings on cigarette packages[edit]

Biographical entry of Allan Rock and the Canadian Historic Canadians project (not the exact name) miss the fact that he was the federal Minister of Health who brought in the world's first legislated demand for graphic warnings on cigarette packaging which saved millions of Canadian lives and billions, (arguably trillions), in health care-related costs, fire-related damages, workplace productivity as well as law enforcement and related-maintenance costs to public spaces and buildings.

Biographical Wiki entry of Allan Michael Rock and his absence from the inclusion of his name in the Canadian Historic Canadians project (not the exact name) miss the fact that he was the federal Minister of Health who brought in the world's first legislated demand for graphic warnings on cigarette packaging. This saved millions of Canadian lives and billions, (perhaps trillions), in major health-related costs, fire-related damages, workplace productivity, law enforcement and related costs to public spaces and properties and to the hospitality and entertainment industry as well as traffic safety. Smoking prevalence, thanks to Minister Rock's cigarette packaging legislation, went into a sharp decline and removed the ability of the tobacco industry to claim that, among other things, tobacco was no more addictive than candy, that the industry did not target children and that it was the fault of retailers that children smoked, that the link between lung cancer and smoking was not known, and that other factors were to blame even when it was long understood that half of all long-term smokers die from tobacco-related causes and lose an average of over 27 years life expectancy. -

Garfield Mahood, OC, former Executive Director of the Non-Smokers' Rights Association would be able to tell you in much more detail what Allan Rock's role and importance in this hugely significant health legislation meant to Canada and many other countries. He lives in Toronto. I worked for this precedent-setting organization until Health Canada under Conservative PMs S.Harper and subsequent Liberal PM J. Trudeau, cut the NSRA's funding. Founded in 1974, the NSRA closed in early 2019, with smoking reduced from over 50% in the early sixties to less than 20% now. University of Ottawa presidency[edit]

I think there ought to be at least a mention of the controversy regarding Rock's handling of the case involving UOttawa criminology faculty members regarding confidentiality of their research. This probably ought to be under the controversies heading because there was widespread disagreement about whether Rock acted appropriately in choosing to not defend the researchers in their court battle. This issue can presumably be presented in a balanced manner that does not take sides.

Thibaudeau v. Canada[edit]

While Minister of Justice, Rock reacted to a Supreme Court ruling that sustained CRA rules that child support was deductible from the payer's income but needed to be included in the recipient's income, which was the practice at the time under Canadian tax law. The Court ruled there was no inherent unfairness in the rule. Under Rock, the tax laws were revised so the payer could not deduct child support payments. A number of women's groups had intervener status in Thibaudeau v. Canada and argued that the old (payer deducts) rules were best.

Rock claimed the changes were in the best interest of children. In most cases, the new rules mean more total tax is paid by a divorced couple than would be the case under the old rules. This was a significant change in the tax laws. Ksbooth (talk) 19:00, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
