The page at Polyarny says "a closed town in Murmansk Oblast, Russia," (though it's not listed at Closed_city#Russia) and that it was "founded in 1896 as Alexandrovsk". It looks as if it might be the same place as Alexandrovsk, Murmansk Oblast. Could an expert verify whether they are 1 or 2 places? PamD (talk) 07:22, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

These are two different entities. Modern Alexandrovsk (=Alexandrovsk, Murmansk Oblast) is a closed administrative-territorial formation (but not an inhabited locality) created in 2008 by merging three administrative-territorial formations (each of which was formed around a single inhabited locality). Those three were Gadzhiyevo (also known as Skalisty), Snezhnogorsk, and Polyarny. The latter used to be called "Alexandrovsk" until 1926 (and "Alexandrovskoye" until 1931), and the modern entity established in 2008 is named after it. Technically, the article about Polyarny should not say it is a closed town, but say that is a part of Alexandrovsk, which is a closed administrative-territorial formation. I'll have that fixed the next time I edit that article.
In short, "Alexandrovsk, Murmansk Oblast" is a unit of administrative division of the oblast, while Polyarny is a town subordinated to that division. Does this help?—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); April 28, 2011; 14:05 (UTC)
