Alexandre de Rhodes' nationality[edit]

Alexandre Rhodes was not a French national. He was born and grew up in Avignon, which was at that time Papal States, and which had never been French until 1791. Therefore, please review the article about his nationality.

What would be his nationality, if any, then? olivier 11:06, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
He might have been a French national, but not a French subject. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.176.120.156 (talk) 19:28, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The controversy part is so wrong and uneducated. It was the bishop Pigneau de Behaine who sought a military alliance between the Nguyen prince and France in order to defeat the Tay Son party and protect the Christian establishments. That alliance was agreed by Louis XVI and signed with prince Canh in 1787. But France's financial mess was a stumbling obstacle. Governor Thomas Conway of Pondicherry delayed the help. Bishop Pigneau lobbied French merchants of Pondicherry for funds and logistic support. He bribed many officers for desertion and hired mercenaries among cipoys and got Fillipinos troops to fill and rank.

Status of Avignon[edit]

I've added 'now in' in front of France, as the status of Avignon was rather changeable up to the Revolution. Strictly a papal territory, it was in the hands of the French monarchy from time to time. I think my addition covers most possibilities. Peridon (talk) 20:35, 18 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

dates and feasts[edit]

I don't see the usefulness of including Catholic feasts after the dates. And e.g. Visitation is no longer July 2. So unless there is specific relevance I suggest they be removed as original research. 142.163.195.124 (talk) 20:38, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
