Education[edit]

No disrespect intended, but how could a lad of 16 graduate college? if this account is accurate, what was the acreditation standard in 1824 Kentucky for college level academia? was this college offering the same acedemic level criteria as William & Mary of Virginia circa 1824? Is there a transcript of Mr. Alexander William Doniphan's college record? as a student PhD in history, I would like to see some documented detail of this account DonDeigo 14:22, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Polygamy[edit]

The work cited says:

"Smith's neighbors were disturbed by his denuniciation of slavery and feared that Mormon beliefs and social practices, including polygamy, would infect the region."

Mormon section[edit]

This section was missing some fundamentally-necessary information; I endeavored to supply it. Also, I've lived in Independence for more than twenty years, and studied the history of the Mormons here, and I'd never heard of polygamy as a reason for the animosity of the old settlers toward them: the reasons I've seen most discussed were:

  • a) the "peculiar" aspects of their religious beliefs, including belief in the Book of Mormon and modern-day prophets;
  • b) their origin in the eastern and northern U.S., as opposed to the South, which is where most of the older settlers had originated;
  • c) their beliefs about the American Indians, and settlers' fears that the Mormons migh ally with the Indians against them;
  • d) settlers' fears that the Mormons were abolitionists, and intended to ferment slave uprisings in the area; and
  • e) The Mormons' idea of Zion, which entailed the building of a Mormon utopia in Jackson County, and (at least according to some, both Mormons and non-Mormons) the expulsion of the earlier residents.

To be honest, I'm not sure that polygamy, or allegations thereof, really factored into it during this time (that largely came later, when they were driven from Nauvoo, Illinois after Smith's death). However, since a reference saying otherwise has been offered, I left the polygamy allegation in the text. - Ecjmartin (talk) 16:59, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
