Transliteration[edit]

The transliteration of the the Yiddish name for Harkavy's birthplace as given in the text is incorrect. The Yiddish name נאַוואַרעדאָק is best rendered by Navaredok, not Nowogrudok. Now, I don't know which is intended by the original editor. The Wikipedia article on the town is Navahrudak, which also gives the names Naugardukas (Lithuanian) and Nowogródek (Polish).

So, off to the reference book, Where Once We Walked: A Guide to the Jewish Communities Destroyed in The Holocaust by Gary Mokotoff and Sallyann Amdur Sack (Teaneck: Avotaynu 1991). On page 234 we find:

Novogrudok, Byel. (Navahredek, Navaredok, Novaredok, Novogrudek, Novohorodek, Novohorodok, Novradok, Nowogrodek, Nowogrudok); pop. 3.405; 120 km WSW of Minsk; 55°36′/25°50′; [I omit 17 acronymic references].

(The population figure gives the number of Jewish inhabitants at some time between 1920 and 1939, from sources compiled by Yad Vashem. It is quite different from the figure in Navahrudak.)

We have here 9 names from Jewish sources, none of which appear in the lead to the article Navahrudak. The last one is a German respelling of the Polish name.
