MISSOURI, not Kansas

"Shiva" by Calder is in Kansas City MISSOURI, not Kansas. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.136.207.177 (talk • contribs) 18:00, 22 July 2006.

Thanks for that, but could there be multiple versions of "Shiva" around. The list of works at calder.org definately lists one in Kansas City, Kansas. They have two other works by Calder in Missouri, but the list here also suggests there is a Shiva in the Crown Center, St. Louis, Missouri. -- Solipsist 14:46, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Did Calder invent the mobile?

Is it really accurate to say that Calder invented the mobile? Could a better term be used to explain the notion without making a claim that he was the first, when it is obvious that there were others before him, and he was the one that merely solidified its claim to fame? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.250.37.253 (talk • contribs)

I think it was Marcel Duchamp who invented the term to describe Calder's work. This happened in autumn, 1931. Do you know of a specific reference to the term "mobile" that predates 1931? Andrew Gobien 03:56, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Impairment

Many years ago, I watched a documentary in which Calder appeared. It was clear that his verbal abilities had been limited. I presume that this was from a stroke. He was still designing mobiles. Movement?

Is Calder primarily surrealist? I see more in common with Kandinsky (abstract expressionism) and Mondrian, than with Dali and Ernst.Exe30 (talk) 00:35, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Rough translation

I assume parts of this article are a rough translation. Example: "His mobile, International Mobile was the centerpiece of the exhibition and hangs in 2007 where it was placed in 1949." Should this read, "hung till 2007.", is it nonsense, or does it mean something else? Hyacinth (talk) 05:42, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Hyacinth, I tried disentangling a different section which had clearly been written by someone for whom English was, umm, difficult. After two weeks or so, my disentanglements were reverted by an anonymous IP user whose IP traced back to France. The old, impenetrable gobbledygook was restored, as indecipherable as before. New infobox photo

I realize the new infobox photo is technically better, with better cropping and a better contrast range, but the old Carl Van Vechten photo, for me, was way more compelling, despite its technical flaws. — HarringtonSmith (talk) 21:47, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

A vast field of gray...

The wholesale removal of so many photographs from the Calder article has left a vast swath of gray real estate across screen after scrolled screen. This of course has seriously decreased the readability of the text (particularly on widescreen monitors), and hence, decreased the enjoyment of the article's readers. Presuming the eight photos currently presented in the Gallery section are safe from imminent deletion, I'd like to suggest we move 'em out of the gallery and sprinkle 'em throughout the eye-numbing gray tundra. I belive that this fine page should be implemented by inserting a link to the web Braniff page related to his works for them.
