I have requested that Aeroparque Jorge Newbery be moved to Jorge Newbery Airpark. This is to follow the standard convention of English Wikipedia airport articles using an English version of the name (i.e. Son Bonet Aerodrome instead of the Spanish Aeródromo de Son Bonet or Düsseldorf International Airport instead of the German Flughafen Düsseldorf International). -- Zyxw (talk) 19:44, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We don't create English usage through translating word-for-word, we copy what English speakers actually use - see WP:UE. The proposed name with Airpark is little-known outside wikipedia (584 ghits); cf Airport (11900 ghits). Then compare to usage of Aeroparque in English - picking out English hits with, say, "flights" we get 22700 ghits - twice as many, even with a more restricted search. WP:COMMONNAME and WP:UE say we use what is most commonly used in English, and that appears to be Aeroparque, the current title. Knepflerle (talk) 13:42, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Using the same Google search strings as in the prior example, let's compare "Dusseldorf International Airport" (47,900 ghits) versus "Flughafen Dusseldorf International" (78,000 ghits). Or look at "Dusseldorf Airport" (218,000 ghits) versus "Flughafen Dusseldorf" (283,000 ghits). If that was the only basis for naming an article, then Dusseldorf International Airport would be renamed to its German name. That said, I'd had no problem with Aeroparque Jorge Newbery this article being renamed to the more common English usage of Jorge Newbery Airport. -- Zyxw (talk) 15:45, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, this article should be moved back immediately - the discussion is ongoing, and there is certainly no consensus for the move just performed, and the evidence and policy points to a different title than the one unilaterally imposed.

Secondly, you're not comparing like with like. "Flughafen Düsseldorf" does not exclude German results - you need to include an English-only word like, say, flights to restrict the search - exactly as I did in the example above. Even with this extra restriction the endonym is still more commonly used. If Flughafen Düsseldorf is the most commonly used name in English when similarly restricted, then that should be moved too. I withdrew my prior request to move this page to Jorge Newbery Airpark (a move I could not make myself), and instead I moved the page to Jorge Newbery Airport. This is in line with "Airport" being the more common English usage and the fact that three other versions of Wikipedia have named it using their native languages: the German article Flughafen Buenos Aires-Jorge Newbery, the Lithuanian article Jorge Newbery oro uostas and Polish article Port lotniczy Jorge Newbery. I don't see my moving this page as a problem, if anything it will draw more attention to this discussion. Arguments about adoption or translation of names in other languages are fallacious - they have nothing to do with how English adopts or translates terms. English is as English-speakers do; if English speakers use a term regularly then it is English - there is no proscriptive language academy for English. Requested move #2[edit]

Since the page was restored to its Spanish name, I have added a new request at Wikipedia:Requested moves that it be moved to Jorge Newbery Airport. I've already stated my reasons above. I'll also add that this is the only airport article I know of on the English Wikipedia that uses a non-English version of the word airport (or airpark, aerodrome, airfield, etc.) in its title. -- Zyxw (talk) 16:56, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Weak Support. This is one of the cases where raw Google falls down on the job; too many of the hits here are computer-generated illiteracies which are using such terms as Aeroparque_Jorge_Newbery_Airport and AEROPARQUE JORGE NEWBERY's ft. , CONCRETE. runway is appropriate for light business jets and turbo-prop aircrafts. AEROPARQUE JORGE NEWBERY is the most convenient airport to AEROPARQUE JORGE NEWBERY. [sic]. I suspect in this case the best available source will be printed books on Argentina (preferably not travel guides, as WP:NCGN explains) . Until someone consults them, I will default to translation. Is this incident necessary here?[edit]

Just found some ATC communications on YouTube that in Aeroparque, some guy interfered with ATC operations and issued fake clearances. Necessary to add here? Where I found the relevant dialogue: is on YouTube, in one of VASAviation's videos (Wiki wont allow me to post the link here).
