Comment on Cosmas and Adulis[edit]

Cosmas (2.58) is very clear on the inscription about the elephant hunts being in memory of Ptolemy III and his father, and Ptolemaic elephant hunts along the Red Sea coasts of Sudan and Eritrea are well attested. What Cosmas does misunderstand is the second inscription, which he incorrectly assumes also to be commemorating the exploits of the Ptolemies.
