Is it known if The Lighthouse will be filmed? With Martin Shaw?

There is an in development production of that name which has been listed within IMDb since the release of P.D. James' novel. The expected release date has gradually extended out from 2008 to the present date of 2011. There are no further identifying details to confirm that this is indeed an adaptation of the Dalgliesh novel. However, more details may be available through IMDb Pro, of which I am not a member. Certainly nothing is yet listed in either Martin Shaw's or Janie Dee's personal pages on IMDb. It would seem odd if "The Lighthouse" and the more recent "The Private Patient" were not to be dramatised, given the success of previous adaptations. Perhaps there are rights/production/casting obstructions? ~DuchessofNewTown~

Timeline[edit]

Anyone got a positive reference for James' stretching of Dalgliesh's life story? He refers to "my 25 years of policing" in Shroud for a Nightingale (1972) which would place his birth around 1920, making him 90 when he married Emma. But so far this is all OR. I've wondered about this myself. In his first case he's already a DCI, which implies an age of 40 or so at a minimum -- even for a fast-advancer. --Michael K SmithTalk 19:44, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In A Mind to Murder Victim Enid Bolam's birthdate is given as 12 December 1922 (Ch 2), and her age at death -- in October -- is given as 41 (Ch 6) : that sets the novel in 1964 -- a year AFTER it was published. He also lights the 14'th candle in memory of his wife, the first being on the day of her death Alanf777 (talk) 04:43, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Gumshoes : Dictionary http://books.google.com/books?id=whnSaLfYcLQC&lpg=PA112&dq=%22adam%20dalgliesh%22%20widower&pg=PA112#v=onepage&q=%22adam%20dalgliesh%22%20widower&f=false says he was widowed in his "mid-twenties". If we take that as 25, then he was 25 in 1964-13 = 1951 and born 1951 - 25 = 1926. If "Private Patient" is set in 2007 that makes him 82 !!! Alanf777 (talk) 02:24, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"my 25 years of policing" Nightingale (1972) : 1970 - 25 = 1935 -- ie he was about 10 when he joined !!!! Alanf777 (talk) 03:24, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Setting of Novels : Mind to Murder" can be dated to 1964 (see above). Lighthouse has a meeting on "Saturday, 23 October", which makes it 2004 (and refers to a 2003 event). Similarly Shroud for a nightingale has "Monday, 12 January" = 1970 Alanf777 (talk) 02:48, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tense : some of the text is written in the present tense eg "now a commander" -- implying the time of the last novel. I don't know if it's worth changing it. Alanf777 (talk) 04:54, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rank, Cars etc[edit]

I think these are best handled by making a table by novel. Alanf777 (talk) 04:43, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation??[edit]

Are we sure of the pronunciation of Commander Dalgliesh's name? Dal-gleash? The Scots Dalgleish Family, the Baronets etc., pronounce it "Daw-lish". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.73.44.193 (talk) 21:09, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
