pronunciation and adjectival form[edit]

Expected adj. form Davidian in the OED for 'David'. Pronunciation extrapolated to be day-vid'-ee-un. kwami 2005 July 6 09:18 (UTC)

Still can't find the English pronunciation of Davida. The only pronunciation I've come across for the feminine name is da-VEE-da, but that might not be thoroughly Anglicized (it is a Hebrew & Spanish name). The adjectival forms would suggest da-VID-a. kwami 08:08, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The tables on this page overlap text and become unreadable when resizing the browser. Running FF 1.0.7.

To whoever changed the pron. to the IPA & removed the question mark: do you actually know this is the standard pronunciation? kwami 10:26, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to be DA-vi-da in Italian, so that's yet a third possibility. But dah-VEE-da seems to be most common for English. And then there's Julia Scudder, "who was called Vida, short for Davida, the feminine form of her father's name" (The Making of American Liberal Theology). The asteroid is also the feminine form of David, and this shows the accent was penultimate at least for this Usonian family. kwami 08:22, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 6th edition, has [ˈdɑvədə]. They might be guessing (as a lot of tech dictionaries seem to do), but even so this might come to be standard, unless there are other dictionaries out there with different pronunciations. kwami 08:52, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OED: Davidic /deɪˈvɪdɪk/ (similarly Davidian), Davidist /ˈdeɪvɨdɪst/
McGraw-Hill: Davida /ˈdɑːvɨdə/
Random House: Davidic /dəˈvɪdɪk/
Facts On File: Davida /dəˈviːdə/

Andy Layden in our external link pronounces it /ˈdɑːvɨdə/, but doesn't know how astronomers who study asteroids may pronounce it. kwami (talk) 20:32, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, Al Conrad called today, and says that his research group and everyone he knows pronounces it /dəˈviːdə/. — kwami (talk) 00:24, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bill Merline says the same. — kwami (talk) 06:53, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

demonym[edit]

Is the demonym "Davidan" or "Davidian"? E.g. for Europa, it is "Europan," not "European." Nicole Sharp (talk) 07:30, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Not finding "Davidan" in any dictionary. "Davidian" and "Davidic" seem to be the established adj forms of "David". — kwami (talk) 20:55, 17 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mass discrepancy[edit]

The article states Davida is the 6th largest (by mass), but the mass given in the physical characteristics box would place it significantly farther down the list. The given mass is also significantly different from that given on the "list of solar system objects by mass" page, which has it in what would be (counting only asteroids) 7th place with a mass of 3.6, versus 1.3 here. David Tanguay. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.159.217.233 (talk) 15:47, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See User talk:Kwamikagami#Revised mass of 511 Davida. --arkuat (talk) 20:11, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Should now be correct per 2001 mass estimate. kwami (talk) 23:10, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The inconsistency between pages remains. If you click on Interamnia in the article, the mass listed for Interamnia is lighter than that for Davida (per this page), even though this Davida page lists Interamnia as more massive. Note that Europa also claims to be the 6th most massive asteroid! I suggest getting rid of the "nth most massive" claims on these pages, since it seems that the data is not firm enough to make such claims. --David Tanguay —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.7.151.3 (talk) 23:04, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

David Tanguay, you are quite right that the "nth most massive" claims commit false precision. I've softened the claim without entirely removing it. Other editors are invited to improve on the situation. Thanks again to kwami for fixing the fiddly bits. --arkuat (talk) 09:23, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's been nearly 10 years, and the article STILL says "7th largest" near the top, but "6th largest" near the bottom. Are we any closer to deciding which story to run with, yet? 146.199.0.203 (talk) 16:16, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have not researched it recently, but I can tell you that there will be overlapping estimates because the uncertainties will overlap. Different methods will produce somewhat different results. We really do not known the precise mass of all the largest asteroids. And 7th by diameter/volume does not mean it needs to the same by mass. -- Kheider (talk) 17:02, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
