Name 2047[edit]

If the 2047 in the name 2047 Smetana is because the asteroid is predicted to impact Earth in 2047, shouldn't this be mentioned in the article? CryMeAnOcean (talk) 20:52, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Smetana's orbit around the sun is all outside the Mars orbit, so it won't come close to earth at all. Where did you find this fabrication? --Gereon K. (talk) 21:12, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the Mars info. Sorry, I'm not aware of any fabrication. I read an article that said an asteroid was coming toward Earth in June 2047. https://www.salon.com/2018/01/14/the-asteroids-most-likely-to-hit-earth/ Wikipedia had this article 2047 Smetana, which is an asteroid, so that is why I asked a question. The provisional designation 1971 UA1 is understandable, but what does the 2047 mean exactly? If Smetana is the 2047th on the list, that could be mentioned in the article. It's the 2047th asteroid which orbit was viewed so many times that it can be said that we can deduct the entire orbital parameters, see for example Minor planet designation. The asteroids mentioned in the Salon article are 2017 XO2 and 2017 YZ1. The article is so unscientific and sensational that they don't even know that the last numbers have to be lower case. Those two asteroids are Apollo asteroids, meaning that their orbit around the sun is so excentric that it crosses earth's pass. Both have not been assigned a number yet. The numbers assigned nowadays are close to 600,000. And here are the articles about them: 2017 XO2 and 2017 YZ1 --Gereon K. (talk) 21:45, 14 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Gereon K. Thank you. I knew you were an expert on this! Why does the Bedřich Smetana article have no mention of 2047 Smetana? Seems like a good idea for people reading Bedřich Smetana to come to this article through a link. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CryMeAnOcean (talkcontribs) 22:06, 14 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Because the article about the composer does not have a chapter called "Honours and namesakes" yet. The asteroid might be mentioned there, together with all major schools and streets named after him and all the major awards he might have received. It's a Wiki. Feel free to research the honours and namesakes of Smetana and add them to the article about him. :-) By the way, a crater on the planet Mercury was named after Smetana as well, see [1]. This crater does not have an article on en.wikipedia yet. Maybe time to write an article about the crater. --Gereon K. (talk) 11:25, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Gereon K. Thanks, again. I'm sure that you are a good writer, so good luck with all your endeavors. I can't even remember to sign my posts on the talk page. LOL CryMeAnOcean (talk) 23:38, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
