Why do the 2022 and 2023 articles only include footballers' most recent clubs, but the 2021 (and all prior) articles list both clubs that players played for in the time period?[edit]

Clubs[edit]

Given that most coverage of Messi's award list him as an Inter Miami CF player, it would be prudent to follow that guideline instead of imposing our own. Like it or not, he did play for a significant portion of this year for an American team. Sounder Bruce 06:29, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@HSV1887: The award was given based on the results of the season instead of the calendar year, with the season starting on 1 August 2022 and ending 31 July 2023, and by the latter date, Messi, for example, had already started playing for Inter Miami, so do not change it back, please. --Mazewaxie (talk • contribs) 09:23, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe change the Gerd Müller Trophy part of the article to not just include Haaland? In the ceremony there was shown who the top 5 strikers with the most goals (Lewandowski, Messi, Kane, Mbappé, and Haaland), but only Haaland (the winner) is shown, so maybe include the other top 5? 2022-23 season[edit]

In fact, Messi was a Paris Saint-Germain player during the 2022-23 season. It's misleading to put "Inter Miami" as his club, even if for sixteen days or so he was a Miami player in the timeframe for which the Ballon d'Or considered. His club should list "Paris Saint-Germain", or at least list both clubs he played for during that timeframe to stay consistent with Ballon d'Or articles previous to 2022. @Paul Vaurie: It should list the most recent club he played for during the period taken into account for the award, since this is alway been the case in the past. The period ended in July 31, 2023, when Messi had already played multiple games with Inter Miami. Also, the Ballon d'Or ceremony rightfully listed him as having played for both PSG and Inter Miami, and L'Equipe did that as well (here again, and again, official winning post). I respect your opinion and I understand it, but Messi was an Inter Miami player at the end of the timeframe taken into account for the award, so this shouldn't even be a debate. --Mazewaxie (talk • contribs) 18:25, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not just Messi. Gundogan, Kim Min-Jae, Onana, Bellingham and Xavi Simons also debuted with their new teams before August 1. In the 2022 edition, Mané (silver ball), and other players debuted with their new teams before August 1. There are probably also cases in the women's award. Some of them in official matches, others only friendlies. But the rules of the Ballon d'Or do not specify anything about official or friendly matches.
