Are we sure that Switzerland will be ranked 5th? The IIHF says, "The quarter-final losers will be ranked 5th to 8th according to 1. their position in the group, 2. their preliminary-round record (1. points, 2. goal difference, 3. goals scored)." With tiered groups, and a different number of teams in each group making the quarters, that seems very odd. But it is does read like Switzerland should be ranked 8th, which is strange. But it would also be strange that Switzerland could lose all their games and be assured of the quarterfinals again next year. This has never come up before, unless you consider the ranking for who would be the home team in the 5th place games as evidence.18abruce (talk) 23:53, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The way I see it when you look at how the playoff bracket was created, Group 1 was virtually seeded 1-5 while the top 3 teams in Group 2 were virtually seeded 6-8, ie. seed 1 (USA) met seed 8 (JPN), seed 4 (RUS) met seed 5 (SUI). And since seeds 1-4 all won their QF, then 5th seed gets 5th place. I agree it is odd that SUI is basically guaranteed to sit in 5th place until a lower ranked team wins a QF. The tiered groups honestly makes no sense to me; they should split them up like every other championship. The IIHF quote makes no sense in this format either, but it seems pretty clear from the seeding that SUI gets 5th. -JamesyWamesy (talk) 03:05, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
