Two Romania teams[edit]

Do you know why Romania is the only country which has TWO teams in the competition ? Withdrawal of another federation, or something else ? 82.240.207.81 21:27, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Two countries (Scotland & Norway off the top off my head?) declined to enter, so the two spare spots were allocated to a) Andorra who were previously not allocated any spot and b) Romania for a reason I can't quite recall but something like they had the highest co-efficient of those countries with only 2 UEFA Cup slots or something like that. - fchd 21:36, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Romania is not the highest-coefficient-federation after Scotland. UEFA splits the associations into three 'groups', those who start in the first round, those in the second and those who start in the third. If any association declines to take their allocation, a place is given to Andorra, and all associations move up a position. This happened in the 2006 edition, Portugal withdrew (Starts in third round), so a place was given to Andorra and all association moved up a position (namely Belgium R2>R3). If any association withdraws after that, their place is 'offered' to the highest ranked association of that 'group', but starts in the first round (like Romania this year) and a team who was originally allocated to the first round moves up to the second round, etc. But if a team withdraws after the draw has been made, the place is directly taken by another association (like Italy/France in 2006). NB. I say 'offered' because the team that replaces another team must go though the same entrance procedure as all other teams in the Intertoto Cup, so may not necessarily be the highest ranked association.--Fridge46 21:55, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of EU flags[edit]

Is anybody else a bit unsure about using the EU flag for the unknown teams? I don't think it's really appropriate so I've removed them. The third round table looks a bit suspect, but I can't think of any way to space it out more Aheyfromhome 21:09, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's just another example of the pointless addition of flags all over the place. Leave them out. Not every reference to something from say, France, needs a French flag next to it. Even more so "Winner Match D" or something. Just leave a space. - fchd 15:41, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well if we must put flags in let's at least use appropriate ones. It's better to be correct and a little unsymmetrical for a couple of months than to be wrong. Quite a few of the countries aren't in the EU, not that the EU has anything to do with national football associations anyway. If there must be flags, I'm in favour of having one for each possible team's nationality. But I can't make it work with my knowledge of wikicode. :) Aheyfromhome 22:53, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

...yes they are. But you still haven't mentioned what the European Union has to do with it. The EU is a political group with many (but not all) European countries. UEFA is the union of football associations in and around the European geographical region. I see no way that their flags are interchangable. Especially seeing as the FIFA family is very clear that their should be no politics in football. Putting the EU flag for all teams in UEFA is like putting a USA flag for all teams in CONCACAF. Eh? What we're referring to aren't "teams" there at the moment, merely "Winner Match A" or similar, and no team has ever been managed by UEFA. Can you explain what you actually mean here? - fchd 16:06, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Such a thing exists?? Cool. Hmmmmm. I think that we're better of with it the way it is. At the moment its clear at a glance which bits of the draw still dont have a team defined. Uefa Intertoto Cup "Regions"[edit]

I agree! According to the map, Greece is in the Southern region, but according to the article they play in the Central-East region. So does Luxembourg, but on the map they belong to the Northern region. Mismatching data. Mb731 21:33, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The map is wrong because it's the same map as for the UEFA Cup, the Intertoto Cup draw was done by regions, just not the same ones as on the map. - MTC 05:17, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The map shown is CORRECT, UEFA uses the same regions for the UEFA Cup and Intertoto Cup, as shown in the map. They are changes because of a odd number of teams in a region/s in a given round. Because of this, teams will get moved around to another region to even out the teams in that round. Teams that get transferred are those nearest to the given region. So this year, in the first round, there was an odd number if teams in the northern and central regions, so Luxembourg moved across to the central. In the second round, there is an odd number of teams in the northern and central regions again, so Poland moved to the north. In the third round, there is an odd number of team in the central and south, so Greece moved to the central zone. Changes are made only on a round by round basis and have to be made keeping with the fact that 3 northern, 4 central and 4 southern team qualify from the Intertoto Cup to the UEFA Cup.--Fridge46 22:07, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vetra-Legia Warsaw Game[edit]

Does anyone know why this game was suspended at halftime? That might merit inclusion.

I haven't seen anything on the UEFA website about this issue, but it sounds like the Legia Warsaw fans were the ones who invaded the pitch. I think Legia Warsaw will be ejected from the competition Funkyduncan 13:32, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

According to this Soccernet article Legia fans did indeed invade the pitch at the half. The Polish FA is ready and anticipating the worst in the case of discipline for the incident, with Legia even saying they're awaiting and will be accepting of whatever comes their way, which will most likely be ejection and possibly banishment of the entire FA for a year or two, perhaps even stripping of Poland of the ability to co-host Euro 2012. --Snojoe 19:08, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Inter-Wiki project idea[edit]

I came up with an idea of having an inter-wiki project for Champions League, UEFA Cup and UEFA Intertoto Cup. The idea is we can have match reports from Wikinews and use them on Wikipedia article for 2008-09 Champions League, 2008-09 UEFA Cup and 2008 UEFA Intertoto Cup. There should be no sourcing issues since there is a requirement of 2 sources per match report.

  1. This is an inter-promotion thing for Wikimedia Foundation.
  2. All match reports would be of the same standard.
  3. The standard NPOV will be in the match reports as required by Wikinews and Wikipedia.

There will be 213 matches for Champions League, 359 UEFA Cup matches, 78 Intertoto Cup matches for a total of 650 matches. Therefore, there will be a number of people needed to do this. If you're interested or have any questions or comments, you can ask them here or if you would like to sign-up, you can go here. Don't write how this is too big or a bad idea.
