Todo[edit]

More info for all of the storms. Hurricanehink (talk) 13:36, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

One thing that should be noted[edit]

RSMC Reunion gives tracks for the full life cycle of each storm, even outside their area of responsibility. The SWI articles should probably do likewise because here's an example of the confusion it might cause. Oscar-Itseng is listed as an Intense Tropical Cyclone [1] even though it had already weakened from this intensity after crossing 90E. Good kitty 17:10, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So I'm in a bit of a pickle (cue Pickle Rick from Rick and Morty). I'm researching TD 5, but there's nothing in the MFR report, and just a brief mention in Gary Padgett's summary. It was a short-lived TD northeast of Madagascar, and I can barely verify its existence. Any suggestions for verifying it? @Jason Rees:@Cyclonebiskit:@Yellow Evan:@Typhoon2013:@Undescribed:@Meow:@ChocolateTrain:@Jasper Deng:@TropicalAnalystwx13:?

Sending out the bat signal, and let's have a party! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:20, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Hurricanehink: Just contributing and spreading my opinions here. So if this is the case where there's nothing in the MFR report about it and there are barely any info about the system, I would make an OS section, like we did to Bakung a few years ago. Typhoon2013 (talk) 01:27, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that RSMC La Réunion did not include TDs in its best track data until the 2011–12 season, indicated by the main website and the other🐱💬 01:39, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have a problem with including it given we have confirmation of GP, but this case is a good reminder of why we should have an other systems section. YE Pacific Hurricane 01:42, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
But do we just say "A tropical depression existed from January 22–24 to the east of the African coast?" That's kinda vague. I was hoping one of you might have another idea. Kinda bummer, but let the #wikiing party continue! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:45, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If the rest of the systems can get full blown sections, maybe stick it in the SS with something like "January featured four named storms, in addition to a tropical disturbance that existed from from January 22–24 to the east of the African coast", but that is kinda wordy. YE Pacific Hurricane 01:59, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have advisories on Zone of disturbed weather No.5 if that counts.Jason Rees (talk) 15:40, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Stacking my claim. Will get it soonish. YE Pacific Hurricane 00:24, 24 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How soon is soonish? Also, hi! :) ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:11, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I was gonna get to this once I finished up my article and am staying true to this. Anyhow, getting started. YE Pacific Hurricane 09:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Mind mentioning offical cyclone year dates? (Hint: the previous 2 SWIO season articles both incorporate this to some extent so you can just copy and paste and modify) YE Pacific Hurricane 09:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • The previous two years only mentioned the tropical cyclone year date because the date changed. I find it odd to shoehorn the TC year in, and I'm not sure it's needed in every article. The season is defined by when the storms happen, not by rigid dates on the calendar. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:19, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Also in that month was Intense Tropical Cyclone Frank, which developed quickly but remained away from land." is this actually worth mentioning in the lead? It kinda messes with the flow and Frank was not an important storm in general, much like none of the TDs which you don't mention in the lead. YE Pacific Hurricane 09:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I mention every named storm in the lead. Frank was also an intense tropical cyclone, kinda like mentioning major hurricanes in an article's lead. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:19, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Symbols (MTS, STS, ect) on the timeline graph to meet WP:ACCESS.
  • I don't understand. The timeline graph is the same as other season articles. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:19, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • " A circulation near Diego Garcia was embedded within the trough that became more defined moving southwestward." a transition word seems to be missing here. YE Pacific Hurricane 09:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Elita dropped heavy rainfall of over 200 mm (8 inches)" why is inches out of nowhere spelled out? YE Pacific Hurricane 09:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Because I got lazy and didn't doublecheck what I wrote before picking the article back up last week :P ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:19, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • "A strong pulse in the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) produced a circulation in the ITCZ to the north of Rodrigues on January 26" link and spell out ITCZ. YE Pacific Hurricane 09:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • "It weakened while crossing its former path, where water temperatures had dropped, a process known as upwelling." given you link upwelling earlier you should de-ink it and the sentence currently reads as if all drops in water temperature is due to upwelling. Honestly you're likely best off dropping the comma and replacing it with the word "in". YE Pacific Hurricane 09:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • "By the next day, Gafilo intensified to tropical cyclone status, aided by decreasing wind shear and the warmest waters of the year. The storm had a large size, extending 1,700 km (1,050 mi) from the Mascarene Islands to the Seychelles, with a distinct eye in the center of the convection. Moving west-southwestward toward northern Madagascar, Gafilo had outflow channels in three directions. With very favorable atmospheric conditions, the cyclone rapidly intensified beginning on March 5." this is a bit more redundancy than I'd expect out of you. You mention it had very favorable conditions in the last sentence yet you discuss the storm's outflow which is somewhat of an odd edition for a season section on a storm with an article and then just two sentences earlier mention warm waters and low shear. YE Pacific Hurricane 09:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Given that Gafilo is the strongest on record, I think the conditions warrant being mentioned. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:19, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • You link landfall three times in the article, the excess links being in Elita's section and in Gaffilo's. YE Pacific Hurricane 09:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • "One of the strongest cyclone records to strike Madagascar," I'd expect an article I write to have an error like this :P Did Gaffilo grab a pencil and write a recordbook of its own while it was making landfall? :P
  • Gaffilo's section in general seems really focused on met details, whether it's MH or focus on stuff like rainfall totals. Then again you're kinda in a tough spot here, with Gaffilo's article being as bad as the vision of a bat and you seemed only to focus on what MFR included in its report. I'd go through 1 or 2 relief web reports randomly and add only the impact information as that'd be more likely to get something that resembles an adequate summary. I could add stuff from LexisNexis if you want, as well, but then you run the risk of me messing up the flow slightly. YE Pacific Hurricane 09:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ah yea, I was worried about that. Fair point, I'll spend more time researching Gafilo's impact. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:19, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • The MFR report had a lot of good info to begin with, but perhaps it wasn't placed the best. I reorganized Gafilo's section, so the first paragraph is more of its origins plus early impacts, then peak intensity and Madagascar impacts, followed by the end of its life cycle. I also included a ReliefWeb source mentioning Elita and Gafilo, as well as the final death/damage toll from EM-DAT. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 13:47, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • "A central dense overcast organized over Helma's center" link to CDO. YE Pacific Hurricane 09:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • "while the BoM estimated peak 10 minute winds of 165 km/h (105 mph).[2][5][3][16][17]" I'm getting kind of picky here but can we keep the refs in numerical order. YE Pacific Hurricane 09:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • " Itseng dissipated without having affected land.[5][3][16][2][17]" see above. YE Pacific Hurricane 09:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Other storms" we got rid of using the word "storms" in headers and started using "systems" instead 18 months back (JC did it with AWB IIRC) so you should change it here too. YE Pacific Hurricane 09:51, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Otherwise, it's good. Just a few mishaps here and there. Also, I'm gonna merge the 3 2006 PHS articles. YE Pacific Hurricane 09:52, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Did all but Gafilo's section, which I'll work on. Thanks for reviewing! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:19, 27 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Yellow Evan: I finished Gafilo's section and added a few new sources. Lemme know if that works. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 13:47, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
