Jan Ehlvest country in 1991[edit]

Jan Ehlvest did play at first for the Soviet Union, but he was on the 1992 Estonian Olympiad team. The old ratings lists at http://www.mark-weeks.com/chess/ratings/ seem to show that Ehlvest was in the Estonian federation in January 1991. (His federation is USR in January 1990 list but EST in July 1990 and later.) Does anyone have a good source or any thoughts? Quale (talk) 07:12, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can see, everything points to him still being a Soviet (URS) registered player until the January 1992 list. That's what's showing at the Olimpbase Elo archive, what is given at the link 'FIDE rating list data 1970-97' on the article page (my original source) and also in Sahovski Informator (vols 51 & 53). Seems conclusive to me. I'm surprised if Mark Weeks thinks otherwise. Brittle heaven (talk) 18:37, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose an alternative question would be - During which Elo period did the Soviet Union dissolve into it's component States? The Union collaped 21 December 1991, so the next Elo list would have been January 1992. Brittle heaven (talk) 18:57, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Right, January 1991 would seem to be just a little bit too early, although that's what http://www.mark-weeks.com/chess/ratings/1991-01.zip says. Apparently these files are from Chess Informant's "Chess is Chess" CD. Thanks for double checking this. Quale (talk) 00:02, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
