Spoiler[edit]

Somebody removed O'Brien's name as a "spoiler." That may be vaguely appropriate for other genres, but operagoers mostly expect to know the plot beforehand and focus on the performance, and discussions of opera normally have little concern about revealing such information. Knowing the identity of the characters is important to following an opera performance, so this really should not be left out. --Michael Snow 00:50, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Yes, I was the one who removed this, for the reason that I myself was spoiled by it (I was halfway through the book when finding this article). I'd like to somehow put in a spoiler warning, and have made a new attempt at this. As far as I can tell, this fact (O'Brien's name, or alternatively that him being the villain) is the only spoiler in this article. I hope you can agree with this solution. Well, it's unattractive and all the sections are rather unnecessary considering there is so little text at present. If the article was more developed, it might be possible to set off the point at issue better. --Michael Snow 16:59, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you have a better solution, I'm all ears. If you really think it shouldn't be in here, you can remove it, I'm not that attached to it. I just felt that if this managed to spoil me, that could happen to others, too.
Maybe developing/expanding the article a little more is the way to go. I'll see if I can help do that at some point. Oliphaunt 23:03, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have a better solution offhand, which is why I didn't change it back. I must confess some surprise that this particular mention happened to spoil it for anybody. Certainly an expanded article would be great, especially dealing more with the musical content of the opera. I wrote the original content based on the resources I could readily find at the time. If more is added, it would be much easier to introduce the characters and leave the spoiler until the expanded discussion. --Michael Snow 23:50, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
