Moser-Pröll won the Overall World Cup in the (quite) last race[edit]

Before final races in Furano were started, Hanni Wenzel had overtooken the lead. Annemarie Moser-Pröll suffered on illness (influenca?) during the North America-races. In the Slalom on March 18th, Wenzel finished on the second place, Moser-Pröll on the third place - and Wenzel had 240 points, Moser-Pröll 220 points, before the last race, the giant slalom, was to start. Due to the rules (point deduction), a handicap for Wenzel was that she could only get 3 points when she could have the win of the giant slalom, while her opponent had a chance to catch 24 points.

It's to mention that final races was bonified with points from the 1st until to the 25th place by giving (in general) 25 points for the win, 24 for the 2nd, 23 for the 3rd until 1 point for the 25th place.

Moser-Pröll was on 6th place after the first run, Wenzel on the 4th place. So Wenzel could catch no point but Moser-Pröll could only catch 19 points, not enough to reach Wenzel's 240 points.

Second run was decisive: Moser-Pröll was able to come to the 2nd place, bonified (for her) with 23 points (one point less than the highest number). Wenzel couldn't catch a point (finished on the 5th place) - and so the final result was 243 points for Moser-Pröll, 240 for Wenzel. Curiosity of the race was that it was won by Marie-Theres Nadig with the biggest margin in all femal World Cup giant slaloms: 5,20 seconds! Such a deficit was not usual for Moser-Pröll but on March 19th, 1979, it didn't mind.
