Season highlights[edit]

I don't have the time at the moment, but if someone wanted to, they could add some of the following details for this very exciting season:

The Cards have eight games went down to the last minute, seven of these are Cardinal victories (see [ http://www.hulu.com/watch/151811/team-highlights-st-louis-cardinals]) The last-minute victories I could find have a *

  • Week 1 vs. Atlanta, Cards win with field goal with 0:03 left won (Jim Bakken kicker)*
  • Week 2 vs. Dallas (OT) (7 total TDs), Cards lost in overtime on interception*
  • Week 3: Beat Giants up at first, then Giants come back in fourth before Cards hold them off.*
  • Week 4: Fell behind to Washington three times, then came back all three times. Broke it open in the 3rd quarter, Cards were 2-2 after four games
  • Week 5: Philadelphia. Cards have 278 team rushing yards (Cards team record). Started 6-game winning streak.
  • Week 6: NY Giants, Mel Gray had two long TDs. Defense picked off three passes. STL intercepted last pass to save game.*
  • Week 7. New England, INT by Pete Barnes on last play of the game.*
  • Week 8. Eagles, down 23-7, but Jim Hart brought team back. Scored 17 unanswered to win by 1 point. 66-yard drive at the end of the game. Cards FG with 0:03 left to win.*
  • Week 9: Redskins. (OT) Cards down 14-3 late in the 3rd quarter, Hart and Mel Grey came back. With :25 left, 4th down, a TD pass fell incomplete. At first, the officials ruled it incomplete, then conferred and changed the ruling to complete, sending the game to overtime at 17-17. Baaken kicks winning FG in overtime. (Very controversial play.)*
  • Week 10: Cards beat the crap out of the Jets
  • Week 11: Bills beat Cards on Thanksgiving
  • Week 12: Cowboys again. Cards take big lead and win.
  • Week 13: Chicago Bears. 34-0 lead. Clinched NFCE title.
  • Week 14: Lions. Jim Otis won NFC rushing title, broke team record. 11 wins most ever in St. Louis.

Only eight sacks allowed all season, a record at the time.
