Democratic National Party Seats[edit]

I am rather sure that the Democratic National Party did not win any seats and that the seats erroneously attributed to it in this article are this of independent candidates Nikolaides Irodotos and Giamakis Iosif. My main source for this is the official Cyprus HoR website results (http://www.parliament.cy/el/βουλευτικές-εκλογές/εκλογές-5ης-ιουλίου-1970), however, I do not own a copy of the book listed as the sole source. @KnolGua: The Nohlen book does have DEK winning two seats. However, the IPU's contemporary report has independents winning two. I have amended the article and used the IPU/Parliament figures. Number 5 7 21:05, 11 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for fixing it! But I believe that your results for independents (10,256) and their respective percentage (5.1) are only the votes to the two independents who won seats. This is most probably intentional, but I think it is misleading because the true number of voted to independents was much bigger. Of course, this just my opinion, so I will not make the changes myself. Whether or not the change will be made is up to you KnolGua (talk) 12:45, 12 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Of course, I am saying this using my own source of the HoR website, and I notice IPU's contemporary report states otherwise, (using the figure 10,256 for independents) however I believe the HoR source is the correct one because IPU’s contemporary report states there were 18 independent candidates in which case it is unlikely that with a total of 10,256 votes two candidates managed to win seats. Also, the HoR source contains all names for candidates, making it more trustworthy. The correct number for Independent votes would be 39356 KnolGua (talk) 13:05, 12 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I do not believe we can use the 39,356 figure in the table as it is not comparable with the figures for the parties. The party figures are the 'average' of candidates rather than the total number received by all the candidates, whereas the 39,356 figure is the total for all the independent candidate added together. The 10,256 may be the 'average' for independent candidates (it does not appear to be the total of the two elected candidates, as they received a total of 6,942 votes (4,012 for Irodotus and 2,930 for Paraskevaides). I am very sorry for the mistake I made, but I can still not figure out where the figure 10,256 comes from. It is probably not the average for all 18 candidates, but nor is it for the two winners. It could be a weighted average for the winning independents’ results for the Districts where they ran(in order to give a , as they are the only “group” who didn’t run in every district. I’ve finally got my hands on a source with the comprehensive results. This source is the book “ Βουλευτικές: Ιστορία Αριθμοί Ανάλυση” (ISBN 9789963798241) by Christoforos Christoforou (The book’s title translates roughly to: “Parliamentary Elections: History, Numbers, Analysis). I have made the following assessments: 1. The figure 5.1% Is the rounded average for the rounded averages of votes of independents in each constituency. I believe this is actually a mistake, because it seems that in Paphos the candidates Giannakis Drousiotis, Liassides Eratosthenis and Irodotos Nicolaides, who got 2698, 2354 and 4012 votes respectively, erroneously had the percentage of their votes reported as 0.15%, 0.13% and 0.23% respectively, which are their actual percentages divided by 100! If we fix this issue, we find that the true result for Independents (when calculated in this way) would be 5.3%. This makes a lot more sense as 5.3% of the total votes is 10374.061, much closer to the 10256 reported than what we would get if we did this with 5.1% (9982) 2. The total number of votes for independents reported has been calculated in the same way as with the parties, as if being an independent was being part of party. Thus, the average of each district’s independents was calculated, the results were rounded down, and then the average of this was found and rounded. 3. I now have the votes for each party + information about the election and electoral system, so I think I can expand the article by additions such as votes “en bloc” for each party, the results in each District (though this may be unnecessary), an explanation for the electoral system (this was always possible but I believe this book explains the system better) and a rough summary of the campaign. For this I also have another source, this website: http://www.papademetris.net/. I also think the percentage for Independents must be edited for the reasons I stated prior (though this is a bit of a nitpick) KnolGua (talk) 13:37, 1 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
