Michigan was not a state when the 1836 Presidential Election was held so...[edit]

Why were settlers in the territory permitted to cast votes at the time? Has it ever happened before that a U.S. territory has been permitted to cast ballots (and, for that matter, electoral votes) in a presidential election BEFORE that territory became a state?Peace peddler (talk) 22:40, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
