Untitled[edit]

Salvador Miranda's list of participants in the Conclave of 1534 contains at lease one error. He lists Cardinal Bernhard von Cles, Bishop of Trent as not in attendance. The list of Onuphrio Panvinio, Epitome Pontificum Romanorum a S. Petro usque ad Paulum IIII. Gestorum (videlicet) electionisque singulorum & Conclavium compendiaria narratio (Venice: Jacob Strada 1557) 399, however, states that Bernhard von Cles was in fact present. Panvinio is backed up by a report to the Duke of Savoy from his agent in Rome, the Bishop of Aosta, where it is stated that Salzburg and Trent arrived on October 8, 1534; and by Gregory Casale, writing to Thomas Cromwell on October 12, the day of the election of Cardinal Farnese, where Trent is specifically mentioned as participating in the adoratio. Both of these are quoted in F. Petruccelli della Gattina, Histoire diplomatique des conclaves Volume II (Paris: 1864) 4, 8. Petruccelli really ought to be in a bibliography.

I've corrected the list according to Pastor, which gives the number of 35 electors and indcates that Cles and Gaddi were present. The lists on the Miranda's site are generally taken from Hierarchia Catholica by Konrad Eubel, which is generally reliable source, but in few points may be inaccurate. As Miranda himself states a number of times, his information generally comes from the notes of F. A. Burkle-Young (e.g. 1559). Miranda's biggest howler is the lists for 1555, where he says that all but four cardinals attended the April Conclave, and all the cardinals attended the May Conclave. Reginald Pole, to name but one, attended neither conclave, though Miranda admits him to both. That did not come from Eubel. --Vicedomino (talk) 04:35, 13 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Context and inadequate information[edit]

Has no one noticed that the article does not say where the Conclave took place? Not even the city. I am aware that it does say so in the Infobox on the left, but Wikipedia is not composed of Infoboxes, but of articles on various subjects. The material should be mentioned in the text. --Vicedomino (talk) 04:35, 13 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
