Orbit affected by Mars and Earth fly-bys[edit]

By how much were the orbital parameters affected by the 9 June 2008 passing of Mars, and the 21 October 2014 passing of Earth ? - Rod57 (talk) 16:21, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Neither was a significant close approach to a planet. Between January 2008 and January 2015, perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) moved from 0.567AU to 0.564AU. These minor perturbations are common with any PHA and are easy to account for when you have a reasonable observation arc with a low Uncertainty Parameter U. It would be more difficult to account for future trajectories if it was passing say 100000 ± 30000 km from a planet and you wanted to know where it would be 50+ years after that. -- Kheider (talk) 17:13, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

2019[edit]

2014 UR116 will NOT make a close approach to Earth in 2019. The closest it will get in 2019 is 2.0 AU (twice the distance to the Sun) on 2019-Dec-31. The asteroid actually comes to aphelion (furthest distance from the Sun) on 2019-Feb-23. -- Kheider (talk) 08:11, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
